Part two closed on hearts harder than stone. This section moves from the record of an old nation to the formation of a new one, and it does the work with direction. It opens by correcting a single word in the mouths of believers. It answers a claim of exclusive salvation with four words: bring your proof. It goes back past both communities to a man who was tested and passed, and it shows that man raising foundations while praying for a messenger who would not arrive for two and a half thousand years. Then it turns the whole community ninety degrees mid prayer and states in plain language what the turn was for. The section ends on the shortest transaction in the Book: remember Me, I will remember you.

The Surah · Verses 104 to 152

Yaaa ayyuhal lazeena aamanoo laa taqooloo raa'inaa wa qoolun zurnaa wasma'oo; wa lilkaafireena 'azaabun aleem

You who believe, do not say raina, say unzurna, and listen. For those who reject there is a painful punishment.

Maa yawaddul lazeena kafaroo min ahlil kitaabi wa lal mushrikeena ai yunazzala 'alaikum min khairim mir Rabbikum; wallaahu yakhtassu birahmatihee mai yashaaa'; wallaahu zul fadlil 'azeem

Those who reject faith among the People of the Book, and the idolaters, do not want any good sent down to you from your Lord. Allah picks out for His mercy whoever He wills. Allah holds immense favour.

Maa nansakh min aayatin aw nunsihaa na-ti bikhairim minhaaa aw mislihaa; alam ta'lam annal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer

Whatever verse We remove or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or its equal. Do you not know that Allah has power over everything?

Alam ta'lam annallaaha lahoo mulkus samaawaati wal ard; wa maa lakum min doonil laahi minw waliyyinw wa laa naseer

Do you not know that the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs to Allah, and that you have no protector or helper besides Allah?

Am tureedoona an tas'aloo Rasoolakum kamaa su'ila Moosaa min qabl; wa mai yatabaddalil kufra bil eemaani faqad dalla sawaaa'as sabeel

Or do you want to question your messenger the way Moses was questioned before? Whoever trades faith for rejection has lost the level road.

Wadda kaseerum min ahlil kitaabi law yaruddoonakum mim ba'di eemaanikum kuffaaran hasadam min 'indi anfusihim mim ba'di maa tabaiyana lahumul haqq; fa'foo washfahoo hattaa yaatiyal laahu bi amrih; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer

Many of the People of the Book would love to turn you back into rejecters after your faith, out of envy inside themselves, after the truth had become clear to them. Pardon and overlook until Allah brings His command. Allah has power over everything.

Wa aqeemus salaata wa aatuz zakaah; wa maa tuqaddimoo li anfusikum min khairin tajidoohu 'indal laah; innal laaha bimaa ta'maloona baseer

Establish the prayer and give the zakat. Whatever good you send ahead for yourselves you will find with Allah. Allah sees what you do.

Wa qaaloo lai yadkhulal jannata illaa man kaana Hoodan aw Nasaaraa; tilka amaaniyyuhum; qul haatoo burhaanakum in kuntum saadiqeen

And they said, no one enters the Garden except one who is a Jew or a Christian. Those are their wishes. Say, bring your proof if you are truthful.

Balaa man aslama wajhahoo lillaahi wa huwa muhsinun falahooo ajruhoo 'inda rabbihee wa laa khawfun 'alaihim wa laa hum yahzanoon

The truth runs the other way. Whoever surrenders his face to Allah while doing good has his reward with his Lord. No fear is on them, and they will not grieve.

Wa qaalatil Yahoodu laisatin Nasaaraa 'alaa shai'inw wa qaalatin Nasaaraa laisatil Yahoodu 'alaa shai'inw wa hum yatloonal Kitaab; kazaalika qaalal lazeena laa ya'lamoona misla qawlihim; fallaahu yahkumu bainahum Yawmal Qiyaamati feemaa kaanoo feehi yakhtalifoon

The Jews said the Christians stand on nothing, and the Christians said the Jews stand on nothing, and both of them recite the Book. In the same way those who know nothing said what they say. Allah will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection over what they were disagreeing about.

Wa man azlamu mimmam mana'a masaajidal laahi ai yuzkara feehas muhoo wa sa'aa fee kharaabihaa; ulaaa'ika maa kaana lahum ai yadkhuloohaaa illaa khaaa'ifeen; lahum fid dunyaa khizyunw wa lahum fil aakhirati 'azaabun 'azeem

Who does greater wrong than one who blocks the name of Allah from being remembered in His houses of worship and works to ruin them? Those had no right to enter them except in fear. In this world they have disgrace, and in the hereafter a tremendous punishment.

Wa lillaahil mashriqu walmaghrib; fa aynamaa tuwalloo fasamma wajhullaah; innal laaha waasi'un 'Aleem

To Allah belong the east and the west. Wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah. Allah is vast, all knowing.

Wa qaalut takhazal laahu waladan subhaanahoo bal lahoo maa fis samaawaati wal ardi kullul lahoo qaanitoon

They said, Allah has taken a son. He is far above that. Everything in the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. All of it stands obedient to Him.

Badee'us samaawaati wal ardi wa izaa qadaaa amran fa innamaa yaqoolu lahoo kun fayakoon

Originator of the heavens and the earth. When He decides a matter, He says to it be, and it is.

Wa qaalal lazeena laa ya'lamoona law laa yukallimunal laahu aw taateenaaa aayah; kazaalika qaalal lazeena min qablihim misla qawlihim; tashaabahat quloobuhum; qad baiyannal aayaati liqawminy yooqinoon

Those who know nothing said, why does Allah not speak to us, or a sign come to us. Those before them said the same thing. Their hearts resemble each other. We have made the signs clear for people who are certain.

Innaaa arsalnaaka bilhaqqi basheeranw wa nazeeranw wa laa tus'alu 'an Ashaabil Jaheem

We sent you with the truth, carrying good news and warning. You will not be questioned about the companions of the blaze.

Wa lan tardaa 'ankal Yahoodu wa lan Nasaaraa hattaa tattabi'a millatahum; qul inna hudal laahi huwal hudaa; wa la'init taba'ta ahwaaa'ahum ba'dal lazee jaaa'aka minal 'ilmi maa laka minal laahi minw waliyyinw wa laa naseer

The Jews will not be pleased with you, nor the Christians, until you follow their way. Say, the guidance of Allah is the guidance. If you followed their desires after the knowledge that came to you, you would have no protector or helper against Allah.

Allazeena aatainaahumul Kitaaba yatloonahoo haqqa tilaawatiheee ulaaa'ika yu'minoona bih; wa mai yakfur bihee fa ulaaa'ika humul khaasiroon

Those We have given the Book, who recite it as it deserves to be recited, they believe in it. Whoever rejects it, those are the losers.

Yaa Baneee Israaa'eelaz kuroo ni'matiyal lateee an'amtu 'alaikum wa annee faddaltukum 'alal 'aalameen

Children of Israel, remember My favour that I gave you, and that I preferred you above the worlds.

Wattaqoo yawmal laa tajzee nafsun 'an nafsin shai'anw wa laa yuqbalu minhaa 'adlunw wa laa tanfa'uhaa shafaa'atunw wa laa hum yunsaroon

Guard yourselves against a day when no soul will pay anything on behalf of another soul, no compensation will be taken from it, no intercession will help it, and they will not be assisted.

Wa izib talaaa Ibraaheema Rabbuhoo bi Kalimaatin fa atammahunna qaala Innee jaa'iluka linnaasi Imaaman qaala wa min zurriyyatee qaala laa yanaalu 'ahdiz zaalimeen

And when Abraham was tested by his Lord with certain words, and he completed them. He said, I am making you a leader for people. He said, and from my descendants. He said, My covenant does not reach wrongdoers.

Wa iz ja'alnal Baita masaabatal linnaasi wa amnanw wattakhizoo mim Maqaami Ibraaheema musallaa; wa 'ahidnaaa ilaaa Ibraaheema wa Ismaa'eela an tahhiraa Baitiya littaaa'ifeena wal 'aakifeena warrukka'is sujood

And when We made the House a place people return to, and a place of safety, and take the standing place of Abraham as a place of prayer. We charged Abraham and Ishmael to purify My House for those who circle it, those who stay at it, and those who bow and prostrate.

Wa iz qaala Ibraaheemu Rabbij 'al haazaa baladan aaminanw warzuq ahlahoo minas samaraati man aamana minhum billaahi wal yawmil aakhiri qaala wa man kafara fa umatti'uhoo qaleelan summa adtarruhooo ilaa 'azaabin Naari wa bi'sal maseer

And when Abraham said, my Lord, make this a secure land and provide its people with fruits, those of them who believe in Allah and the Last Day. He said, and whoever rejects, I will let him enjoy a little, then drive him to the punishment of the Fire. Wretched is that destination.

Wa iz yarfa'u Ibraaheemul qawaa'ida minal Baiti wa Ismaa'eelu Rabbanaa taqabbal minnaa innaka Antas Samee'ul 'Aleem

And when Abraham was raising the foundations of the House, and Ishmael with him, our Lord, accept this from us. You are the Hearing, the Knowing.

Rabbanaa waj'alnaa muslimaini laka wa min zurriyyatinaaa ummatam muslimatal laka wa arinaa manaasikanaa wa tub 'alainaa innaka Antat Tawwaabur Raheem

Our Lord, make the two of us submitted to You, and from our descendants a community submitted to You. Show us our rites, and turn to us. You are the Ever Relenting, the Merciful.

Rabbanaa wab'as feehim Rasoolam minhum yatloo 'alaihim aayaatika wa yu'allimuhumul Kitaaba wal Hikmata wa yuzakkeehim; innaka Antal 'Azeezul Hakeem

Our Lord, raise among them a messenger from themselves who will recite Your verses to them, teach them the Book and the wisdom, and purify them. You are the Almighty, the Wise.

Wa mai yarghabu 'am millati Ibraaheema illaa man safiha nafsah; wa laqadis tafainaahu fid dunyaa wa innahoo fil aakhirati laminas saaliheen

Who turns away from the way of Abraham except one who makes a fool of his own soul? We chose him in this world, and in the hereafter he is among the righteous.

Iz qaala lahoo Rabbuhooo aslim qaala aslamtu li Rabbil 'aalameen

When his Lord said to him, submit, he said, I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds.

Wa wassaa bihaaa Ibraaheemu baneehi wa Ya'qoob, yaa baniyya innal laahas tafaa lakumud deena falaa tamootunna illaa wa antum muslimoon

Abraham charged his sons with it, and so did Jacob. My sons, Allah has chosen the religion for you, so do not die except in a state of submission.

Am kuntum shuhadaaa'a iz hadara Ya'qoobal mawtu iz qaala libaneehi maa ta'budoona mim ba'dee qaaloo na'budu ilaahaka wa ilaaha aabaaa'ika Ibraaheema wa Ismaa'eela wa Ishaaqa Ilaahanw waahidanw wa nahnu lahoo muslimoon

Or were you witnesses when death came to Jacob, when he said to his sons, what will you worship after me? They said, we will worship your God and the God of your fathers Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac, one God, and to Him we submit.

That was a community that has passed. It has what it earned and you have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.

Wa qaaloo koonoo Hoodan aw Nasaaraa tahtadoo; qul bal Millata Ibraaheema Haneefanw wa maa kaana minal mushrikeen

And they said, be Jews or Christians and you will be guided. Say, rather the way of Abraham, upright, and he was not one of those who set up partners.

Say, we believe in Allah, and in what was sent down to us, and what was sent down to Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus, and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no separation between any of them, and to Him we submit.

Fa in aamanoo bimisli maaa aamantum bihee faqadih tadaw wa in tawallaw fa innamaa hum fee shiqaaq; fasayakfeekahumul laah; wa Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem

If they believe in the like of what you believe in, they are guided. If they turn away, they are simply in a split. Allah will be enough for you against them. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Sibghatal laahi wa man ahsanu minal laahi sibghatanw wa nahnu lahoo 'aabidoon

The dye of Allah. Who gives a better dye than Allah? And we are His worshippers.

Qul atuhaaajjoonanaa fil laahi wa Huwa Rabbunaa wa Rabbukum wa lanaaa a'maalunaa wa lakum a'maalukum wa nahnu lahoo mukhlisoon

Say, do you argue with us about Allah, when He is our Lord and your Lord, and we have our deeds and you have your deeds, and we are sincere to Him?

Or do you say that Abraham and Ishmael and Isaac and Jacob and the tribes were Jews or Christians? Say, do you know better, or Allah? Who does greater wrong than one who hides a testimony he holds from Allah? Allah is not unaware of what you do.

That was a community that has passed. It has what it earned and you have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do.

Sayaqoolus sufahaaa'u minan naasi maa wallaahum 'an Qiblatihimul latee kaanoo 'alaihaa; qul lillaahil mashriqu walmaghrib; yahdee mai yashaaa'u ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeem

The foolish among the people will say, what turned them away from the qibla they were facing? Say, to Allah belong the east and the west. He guides whoever He wills to a straight path.

Wa kazaalika ja'alnaakum ummatanw wasatal litakoonoo shuhadaaa'a 'alan naasi wa yakoonar Rasoolu 'alaikum shaheedaa; wa maa ja'alnal qiblatal latee kunta 'alaihaaa illaa lina'lama mai yattabi'ur Rasoola mimmai yanqalibu 'alaa 'aqibayh; wa in kaanat lakabeeratan illaa 'alal lazeena hadal laah; wa maa kaanal laahu liyudee'a eemaanakum; innal laaha binnaasi la Ra'oofur Raheem

In the same way We made you a middle community, so that you would be witnesses over people and the messenger would be a witness over you. We set the qibla you were facing only to know who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels. It was heavy, except for those Allah guided. Allah was never going to let your faith go to waste. Allah is gentle and merciful to people.

Qad naraa taqalluba wajhika fis samaaa'i fala nuwalliyannaka qiblatan tardaahaa; fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil Haraam; wa haisu maa kuntum fawalloo wujoohakum shatrah; wa innal lazeena ootul Kitaaba laya'lamoona annahul haqqu mir Rabbihim; wa mal laahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ya'maloon

We see your face turning about towards the sky. We will turn you to a qibla that pleases you. Turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces towards it. Those who were given the Book know it is the truth from their Lord. Allah is not unaware of what they do.

Wa la'in ataital lazeena ootul Kitaaba bikulli aayatim maa tabi'oo Qiblatak; wa maaa anta bitaabi'in Qiblatahum; wa maa ba'duhum bitaabi'in Qiblata ba'd; wa la'init taba'ta ahwaaa'ahum mim ba'di maa jaaa'aka minal 'ilmi innaka izal laminaz zaalimeen

If you brought every sign to those who were given the Book, they would not follow your qibla. You are not going to follow their qibla, and none of them follows the qibla of another. If you followed their desires after the knowledge that has come to you, you would then be one of the wrongdoers.

Those We gave the Book recognise it the way they recognise their own sons. A group of them hides the truth while they know it.

Alhaqqu mir Rabbika falaa takoonanna minal mumtareen

The truth is from your Lord, so never be among the doubters.

Wa likullinw wijhatun huwa muwalleehaa fastabiqul khairaat; ayna maa takoonoo yaati bikumul laahu jamee'aa; innal laaha 'alaa kulli shai'in qadeer

Everyone has a direction he turns to. Race one another to the good. Wherever you are, Allah will bring you all together. Allah has power over everything.

Wa min haisu kharajta fawalli wajhaka shatral Masjidil Haraami wa innahoo lalhaqqu mir Rabbik; wa mal laahu bighaafilin 'ammaa ta'maloon

From wherever you set out, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. It is the truth from your Lord. Allah is not unaware of what you do.

From wherever you set out, turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque. Wherever you are, turn your faces towards it, so that people have no argument against you, except those of them who do wrong. Do not fear them, fear Me, so that I may complete My favour on you, and so that you may be guided.

Kamaaa arsalnaa feekum Rasoolam minkum yatloo 'alaikum aayaatinaa wa yuzakkeekum wa yu'allimukumul Kitaaba wal Hikmata wa yu'allimukum maa lam takoonoo ta'lamoon

In the same way We sent among you a messenger from yourselves, reciting Our verses to you, purifying you, teaching you the Book and the wisdom, and teaching you what you did not know.

Fazkurooneee azkurkum washkuroo lee wa laa takfuroon

So remember Me, I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not reject Me.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Verses 104 to 110

One Word, Then a Verse Withdrawn.

The section opens by editing the vocabulary of believers. Raina and unzurna both mean roughly attend to me, but raina carried a second reading available to anyone who wanted it. Ibn Kathir, in Tafsir al-Quran al-Azim, records that a group would say the word to the Prophet with a twist that turned it into an insult while keeping deniability. The ruling does not punish the twisters. It removes the word. When a term you use innocently is being used as a lever by someone else, you change the term, because the point is the meaning delivered rather than the meaning intended.

Verse 106 answers the objection that follows any change in a revealed instruction. Whatever verse We remove or cause to be forgotten, We bring one better than it or its equal. The claim is not that the earlier ruling was wrong. The claim is that the Lawgiver retains the authority to legislate in stages, and verse 107 grounds it in ownership: the dominion of the heavens and the earth belongs to Him. A staged law is not an unstable law. It is a law delivered to people who live in time.

Verse 108 catches the appetite behind the objection: do you want to question your messenger the way Moses was questioned. Part two spent seven verses on people who questioned a command about a cow until it nearly could not be obeyed. The link is deliberate. Verse 109 then names what actually drives the pressure, hasad, envy sitting inside the objector rather than a problem sitting inside the text, and it prescribes pardon and overlooking rather than retaliation. Verse 110 gives the two disciplines that fill the space where argument would have gone: establish the prayer, give the zakat.

Verses 111 to 123

Bring Your Proof.

Verse 111 quotes the claim in its bare form. No one enters the Garden except one who is a Jew or a Christian. The Quran labels it before answering it, tilka amaaniyyuhum, those are their wishes, and then hands over the burden in four words. Bring your proof if you are truthful. A claim about who is saved is a claim about evidence, and a wish is not evidence.

Verse 112 supplies the actual criterion and it costs nothing to state. Whoever surrenders his face to Allah while doing good. Inward submission and outward excellence. That is the same structure as verse 62 in part two, belief plus righteous work, arriving again from a different direction.

Verse 113 exposes the shape of the dispute. Each community declares the other stands on nothing, and both recite the Book. Then the sentence lands: in the same way those who know nothing said what they say. Two literate communities reached the same verdict as the illiterate one, which means the literacy was not doing the work. Verse 114 names the worst version of exclusion, blocking the remembrance of Allah in His own houses and working to ruin them. Verse 115 answers the whole architecture of gatekeeping in one line. To Allah belong the east and the west. Wherever you turn, there is the face of Allah.

Verse 116 handles the claim of a son with a single word, subhaanahu, He is far above that, and then verse 117 explains why offspring is unnecessary for a Being who creates by saying be. Verse 118 records the demand for a private sign and notes that earlier peoples made the same demand, tashaabahat quloobuhum, their hearts resemble each other. Verse 119 releases the Prophet from responsibility for the outcome. Verse 120 states the terms plainly: they will not be pleased with you until you follow their way, so guidance cannot be negotiated toward approval. Verse 123 closes the passage by removing every proxy on the last day. No soul pays for another. No compensation. No intercession that helps them. Whatever the claim of inherited salvation rested on, the day it is redeemed is the day it is not accepted.

Verses 124 to 129

Tested, and Made a Leader.

Both communities in the argument claim Abraham. The Quran goes to him directly and reads his file. He was tested with words and he completed them. Al Tabari, in Jami al-Bayan, notes that the commentators differ over what the words were. What the verse insists on is the sequence: the test came first, the appointment came second. Leadership is what completion earned, not what lineage handed over.

Then Abraham asks for the appointment to run through his descendants, and the answer is the hinge of the entire section. My covenant does not reach wrongdoers. The father of both claiming communities asked for hereditary standing and was told, in the moment of his own honour, that the line does not carry it. Verse 111 claims salvation by membership. Verse 124 refuses it at the source.

Verses 125 to 129 show what he did with the appointment. He purified a House for people who would come later. He prayed for a city he would not live to see settled, and when he asked for provision he asked it for the believers among its people, and was corrected even there, because the rejecter is also given a little. He raised foundations with his son, and the sentence recorded is not a boast about the building. Our Lord, accept this from us. Then two requests. Make from our descendants a community submitted to You. Raise among them a messenger from themselves who will recite Your verses, teach the Book and the wisdom, and purify them. The man laying stone in an empty valley was praying for the reader of this page.

Verses 130 to 141

A Way, Not a Membership.

Verse 131 gives the whole religion in one exchange of two words. His Lord said, submit. He said, I have submitted to the Lord of the worlds. No negotiation, no clarifying question, no delay. Read that against part two, where a one word command about a cow produced four rounds of questions and an obedience that almost did not happen.

Verse 132 shows the same instruction passed down, and verse 133 puts it at the deathbed. Jacob asks his sons one question, what will you worship after me. Not what will you own, not what will you build. The answer names one God and one posture, and to Him we submit. Verse 134 then removes the inheritance claim in a single sentence, and the sentence is judged important enough to be repeated verbatim at verse 141. That was a community that has passed. It has what it earned and you have what you earn. You will not be questioned about what they used to do. Ancestors are not a portfolio.

Verse 135 answers be Jews or Christians with the way of Abraham, hanif, upright, and adds that he was not one of those who set up partners. Verse 136 then lists the prophets and refuses to rank them: we make no separation between any of them. Verse 138 gives the image that closes the argument, sibghah, the dye of Allah. A dye goes through the fabric rather than sitting on it. Who gives a better dye than Allah. A label is applied to the outside. A dye changes what the thing is.

Verses 142 to 152

The Direction You Face.

Al-Bukhari transmits from Al Bara ibn Azib that the Prophet prayed facing Bayt al-Maqdis for sixteen or seventeen months before the qibla was changed to the Kaaba. The change was public, physical, and impossible to perform quietly. A congregation mid prayer had to turn its body.

Verse 142 predicts the objection before it is spoken, and answers it with the line already used at verse 115. To Allah belong the east and the west. The direction has no power in itself. Verse 143 then states what the direction was for, in language that leaves nothing to guess. We set the qibla you were facing only to know who follows the messenger from who turns back on his heels. The old qibla was a sorting instrument. Following an instruction that carries no visible logic is exactly the test that reveals whether you are following the instruction or following your own reasoning that happens to agree with it. The same verse concedes the cost, and it was heavy, and then guarantees the earlier prayers, Allah was never going to let your faith go to waste.

Verse 143 also carries the title of the community: ummatan wasatan, a middle nation, positioned to be witnesses over people. Verse 144 grants the change with unusual tenderness, We see your face turning about towards the sky, before it grants what he was silently hoping for. Verse 146 states that the People of the Book recognise the truth the way they recognise their own sons, and a group of them hides it knowingly. Verse 148 releases the argument entirely and replaces it with a race: everyone has a direction he turns to, so race one another to the good.

Verse 152 ends the section with the shortest terms in the Book. Remember Me, I will remember you. Be grateful to Me, and do not reject Me. Four clauses, no conditions attached, and the first move belongs to you.

Structural Summary

Verses 104 to 152. The Direction You Face.

Verses 104 to 110. Vocabulary and authority. A word removed, a ruling replaced, envy named as the real objection.

Verses 111 to 123. The claim and the proof. Exclusive entry answered with evidence, gatekeeping answered with the east and the west, proxies removed for the last day.

Verses 124 to 141. Abraham. Tested then appointed, a covenant that does not reach wrongdoers, foundations raised with a prayer for a messenger, and a dye rather than a label.

Verses 142 to 152. The turn. A congregation rotated to sort followers from those who turn on their heels, a middle nation named, and a race to the good.

The Practice · Daily Integration

Verses 104 to 152. Change the Word, Not the Intention.

Verse 104 removed a word because of how it landed, not because of how it was meant. Name one thing you say that is technically defensible and lands wrong. Change the word this week rather than defending the intention.

Verse 124 says the covenant does not reach wrongdoers, spoken to a man asking on behalf of his own children. Name one advantage you are relying on that you inherited rather than earned. Write what you would have to complete to hold it on your own terms.

Verse 143 says the qibla existed to reveal who follows the messenger from who turns on his heels. Name the instruction in your practice that you obey only when you can see the reason. That is the one being measured.
