The Surah · Verses 172 to 206

Wa iz akhaza Rabbuka mim Baneee Aadama min zuhoorihim zurriyyatahum wa ash hadahum 'alaa anfusihim alastu bi Rabbikum qaaloo balaa shahidnaaa; an taqooloo Yawmal Qiyaamati innaa kunnaa 'an haazaa ghaafileen

And when your Lord took from the children of Adam, from their backs, their offspring, and made them testify about themselves, am I not your Lord. They said, yes, we testify. So that you would not say on the Day of Standing, we were unaware of this.

Aw taqoolooo innamaaa ashraka aabaaa 'unaa min qablu wa kunnaa zurriyyatam mim ba'dihim afatuhlikunna bimaa fa'alal mubtiloon

Or say, our fathers associated others before, and we were offspring after them. Will You destroy us for what the falsifiers did.

And in this way We lay out the signs in detail, so that they may return.

Watlu 'alaihim naba allazeee aatainaahu Aayaatinaa fansalakha minhaa fa atba'a hush Shaytaano fakaana minal ghaaween

And recite to them the account of the one We gave Our signs, and he slipped out of them, so Satan followed him, and he became of those who went astray.

Wa law shi'naa larafa'naahu bihaa wa laakin nahooo akhlada ilal ardi watta ba'a hawaah; famasaluhoo kamasalil kalb; in tahmil 'alaihi yalhas aw tatruk hu yalhas; zaalika masalul qawmil lazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa; faqsusil qasasa la'allahum yatafakkaroon

And if We had willed, We would have raised him by them, but he clung to the earth and followed his desire. So his likeness is the likeness of a dog. If you drive it off, it pants, and if you leave it, it pants. That is the likeness of the people who called Our signs a lie. So recount the accounts, so that they may reflect.

Saaa'a masalanil qawmul lazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa wa anfusahum kaanoo yazlimoon

Bad is the likeness of the people who called Our signs a lie, and they were wronging themselves.

Mai yahdil laahu fa huwal muhtadee wa mai yudlil fa ulaaa'ika humul khaasiroon

Whoever Allah guides is the one guided, and whoever He lets go astray, those are the losers.

Wa laqad zaraanaa li jahannama kaseeram minal jinni wal insi lahum quloobul laa yafqahoona bihaa wa lahum a'yunul laa yubisiroona bihaa wa lahum aazaanul laa yasma'oona bihaa; ulaaa'ika kal an'aami bal hum adall; ulaaa'ika humul ghaafiloon

And We have made for Hell many of the jinn and mankind. They have hearts they do not understand with, and they have eyes they do not see with, and they have ears they do not hear with. Those are like cattle, rather they are further astray. Those are the heedless.

Wa lillaahil Asmaaa 'ul Husnaa fad'oohu bihaa wa zarul lazeena yulhidoona feee Asmaaa'ih; sa yujzawna maa kaanoo ya'maloon

And to Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call on Him by them. And leave those who distort His names. They will be paid for what they have been doing.

And among those We created is a community that guides by the truth and does justice by it.

Wallazeena kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa sanastadrijuhum min haisu laa ya'lamoon

And those who called Our signs a lie, We will draw them in by stages from where they do not know.

Wa umlee lahum; inna kaidee mateen

And I give them time. My plan is firm.

Awalam yatafakkaroo maa bisaahibihim min jinnah; in huwa illaa nazeerum mubeen

Have they not reflected. There is no madness in their companion. He is only a clear warner.

Awalam yanzuroo fee malakootis samaawaati wal ardi wa maa khalaqal laahu min shai'inw wa an 'asaaa ai yakoona qadiqtaraba ajaluhum fabi aiyi hadeesim ba'dahoo yu'minoon

Have they not looked into the dominion of the heavens and the earth, and whatever Allah created of anything, and that perhaps their term has drawn near. So in what statement after this will they believe.

Whoever Allah lets go astray has no guide, and He leaves them wandering blindly in their overreaching.

Yas'aloonaka 'anis Saa'ati aiyaana mursaahaa qul innamaa 'ilmuhaa 'inda Rabbee laa yujallaeehaa liwaqtihaaa illaa Hoo; saqulat fis samaawaati wal ard; laa taateekum illaa baghtah; yas'aloonaka ka annaka hafiyyun 'anhaa qul innamaa 'ilmuhaa 'indal laahi wa laakinna aksaran naasi laa ya'lamoon

They ask you about the Hour, when it will arrive. Say, its knowledge is only with my Lord. No one will reveal it at its time except Him. It weighs heavily on the heavens and the earth. It will not come to you except suddenly. They ask you as though you were eager for it. Say, its knowledge is only with Allah, but most people do not know.

Qul laaa amliku linafsee naf'anw wa laa darran illaa maa shaaa'al laah; wa law kuntu a'alamul ghaiba lastaksartu minal khairi wa maa massaniyas soo'; in ana illaa nazeerunw wa basheerul liqawminy yu'minoon

Say, I hold no benefit for myself and no harm, except what Allah wills. And if I knew the unseen, I would have gathered much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am only a warner and a bringer of good news to a people who believe.

Huwal lazee khalaqakum min nafsinw waahidatinw wa ja'ala minhaa zawjahaa liyas kuna ilaihaa falammaa taghash shaahaa hamalat hamlan khafeefan famarrat bihee falammaaa asqalad da'awal laaha Rabbahumaa la'in aayaitanaa saalihal lanakoo nanna minash shaakireen

He is the One who created you from a single soul and made from it its mate, so that he would find rest in her. Then when he covered her she carried a light burden and moved about with it. Then when she grew heavy, they both called on Allah their Lord, if You give us a sound child we will certainly be of the grateful.

Falammaaa aataahumaa saalihan ja'alaa lahoo shurakaaa'a feemaaa aataahumaa; fata'aalal laahu 'ammaa yushrikoon

Then when He gave them a sound child, they assigned to Him partners in what He had given them. So exalted is Allah above what they associate.

A yushrikoona maa laa yakhluqu shai'anw wa hum yukhlaqoon

Do they associate what creates nothing and is itself created.

Wa laa yastatee'oona lahum nasranw wa laaa anfusahum yansuroon

And they cannot give them any help, nor can they help themselves.

Wa in tad'oohum ilalhudaa laa yattabi'ookum; sawaaa'un 'alaikum a-da'awtumoohum am antum saamitoon

And if you call them to guidance they will not follow you. It is the same for you whether you call them or you stay silent.

Innal lazeena tad'oona min doonil laahi 'ibaadun amsaalukum fad'oohum fal yastajeeboo lakum in kuntum saadiqeen

Those you call on besides Allah are servants like you. So call on them and let them answer you, if you are truthful.

A lahum arjuluny yamshoona bihaa am lahum aidiny yabtishoona bihaaa am lahum a'yunuy yubsiroona bihaaa am lahum aazaanuny yasma'oona bihaa; qulid'oo shurakaaa'akum summa keedooni falaa tunziroon

Do they have feet they walk with, or hands they grasp with, or eyes they see with, or ears they hear with. Say, call your partners, then scheme against me and give me no delay.

Inna waliyyial laahul lazee nazzalal Kitaaba wa Huwa yatawallas saaliheen

My Protector is Allah, who sent down the Book. And He protects the righteous.

Wallazeena tad'oona min doonihee laa yastatee'oona nasrakum wa laaa anfusahum yansuroon

And those you call on besides Him cannot help you, nor can they help themselves.

Wa in tad'oohum ilal hudaa laa yasm'oo wa taraahum yanzuroona ilaika wa hum laa yubsiroon

And if you call them to guidance they do not hear. And you see them looking at you, and they do not see.

Khuzil 'afwa waamur bil'urfi waa'rid 'anil jaahileen

Take what is easily given, and order what is right, and turn away from the ignorant.

Wa immaa yanzaghannaka minash Shaitaani nazghun fasta'iz billaah; innahoo Samee'un Aleem

And if an incitement from Satan provokes you, then seek refuge in Allah. He is Hearing, Knowing.

Innal lazeenat taqaw izaa massahum taaa'ifum minash Shaitaani tazakkaroo fa izaa hum mubsiroon

Those who are conscious of Allah, when a visit from Satan touches them, they remember, and then they are seeing.

Wa ikhwaanuhum yamuddoonahum fil ghaiyi summa laa yuqsiroon

And their brothers pull them deeper into error, and then they do not stop short.

Wa izaa lam taatihim bi aayatin qaaloo law lajtabai tahaa; qul innamaaa attabi'u maa yoohaaa ilaiya mir Rabbee; haazaa basaaa'iru mir Rabbikum wa hudanw wa rahmatul liqawminy yu'minoon

And when you do not bring them a sign, they say, why have you not gathered one. Say, I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord. This is clear insight from your Lord, and guidance and mercy for a people who believe.

And when the Quran is recited, listen to it and be silent, so that you may receive mercy.

Wazkur Rabbaka fee nafsika tadarru'anw wa kheefatanw wa doonal jahri minal qawli bilghuduwwi wal aasali wa laa takum minal ghaafileen

And remember your Lord within yourself, in humility and in fear, and without raising your voice, in the mornings and the evenings. And do not be of the heedless.

Innal lazeena 'inda Rabbika laa yastakbiroona 'an 'ibaadatihee wa yusabbihoonahoo wa lahoo yasjudoon

Those who are with your Lord are not too arrogant to worship Him, and they glorify Him, and to Him they prostrate.

The Commentary

Overview

The Covenant Before Anyone Was Born.

Part Four opens on the oldest event in the chapter, older than the garden. Offspring drawn from the backs of the children of Adam, made to testify about themselves, and asked one question. Am I not your Lord. They said yes.

Verses 172 and 173 then state the purpose, and the purpose is to close two exits. So that you would not say we were unaware of this. Or say, our fathers associated others before us and we came after them. Ignorance, and inheritance. The two defenses every person reaches for, both foreclosed before anyone was born.

What follows is a chapter closing its case. A man who had the signs and slipped out of them like something shedding a skin. Faculties itemized and found unused. Names given for calling and distorted instead. A Hour asked about twice and refused twice in one verse. A prophet stating plainly what he does not know and cannot do.

And then the last eight verses, which are among the most practical in the Quran. Take what is easily given. Seek refuge when provoked. Listen when it is recited. Remember your Lord quietly, morning and evening.

The chapter opened with a command to prostrate and one refusal. It ends on a verse of prostration, and the reader is asked to perform it.

Verses 172 to 186

The Man Who Slipped Out of the Signs.

Verse 175 uses a verb that does most of the work. We gave him Our signs, and he slipped out of them. The word describes an animal coming out of its skin, or a month sliding out of the year. It is not a stumble and it is not a rejection. It is a gradual separation from something that was once attached, ending with the signs still intact and the man no longer inside them. Verse 176 says what would have happened otherwise: if We had willed, We would have raised him by them. The same signs that would have lifted him are the ones he came out of.

Then the diagnosis, and it is one phrase. He clung to the earth. The Arabic carries permanence, a man settling into the ground as though he intended to stay. And then the likeness, which is harsher than anything else in the chapter. His likeness is the likeness of a dog. If you drive it off, it pants, and if you leave it, it pants. The panting is not a response to anything. Pressure produces it, and so does the absence of pressure. A man whose wanting has become weather rather than a reaction to circumstances is describable this way and no other.

Verse 179 completes the inventory begun at verse 22 of Part One. Hearts they do not understand with. Eyes they do not see with. Ears they do not hear with. Then, those are like cattle, rather they are further astray. The comparison is not an insult about intelligence. Cattle use every faculty they were issued for exactly what it was issued for. That is the standard being failed.

Verse 180 gives the corrective in one line. To Allah belong the most beautiful names, so call on Him by them. The names are given as instruments for calling, not as material for discussion. And the second half, leave those who distort His names, tells you what to do about the argument rather than how to win it.

Verses 182 and 183 name the mechanism people most need to know about and least want to hear. We will draw them in by stages from where they do not know. And I give them time. Istidraj is a slow approach that feels like nothing at all, or better than nothing, made of continued success and continued absence of consequence. The verse is not describing punishment being delayed. It is describing the delay as part of the process.

Verses 187 to 198

I Hold No Benefit for Myself.

Verse 187 is asked about the Hour and refuses twice in the same verse, with a description of the questioners in between. They ask you as though you were eager for it. As if the answer were being withheld out of preference rather than because it was never given. And the verse closes the way it opened. Its knowledge is only with Allah.

Verse 188 is one of the most important verses in the Quran for anyone tempted to attribute powers to the Prophet, peace be upon him, that he refused for himself. I hold no benefit for myself and no harm, except what Allah wills. And then the argument, delivered as plain logic: if I knew the unseen, I would have gathered much good, and no harm would have touched me. Look at my life. That is the evidence offered.

Verses 189 and 190 describe something small and exact. A couple, a pregnancy that starts light enough to carry around, then grows heavy. And in the heaviness they pray, together, and the prayer contains a promise. If You give us a sound child we will certainly be of the grateful. Then the child arrives, and gratitude gets distributed elsewhere. It is the same shape as verse 134 in Part Three, where relief cancelled the promise made under pressure. Here it happens in a bedroom rather than a palace, which is where most people encounter it.

Verse 195 is a physical audit. Do they have feet they walk with, or hands they grasp with, or eyes they see with, or ears they hear with. The same four faculties listed in verse 179, this time asked about the objects rather than the people. In verse 179, men had the equipment and did not use it. In verse 195, the things they venerate do not have the equipment at all. Placed together, the passage says something about who is actually below whom.

And verse 198 gives the image that ends this section. You see them looking at you, and they do not see. Eye contact, attention, apparent engagement, and nothing arriving.

Verses 199 to 206

Take What Is Easily Given.

Verse 199 is three instructions in six words, and it may be the most complete verse on character in the Quran. Take what is easily given. Order what is right. Turn away from the ignorant.

The first is about expectations of people. Al-afw here carries the sense of what comes without extraction, the surplus, what a person offers freely. Take that, and do not go after the rest. Most damage in relationships comes from insisting on the portion that was never going to be given willingly.

The second keeps the verse from becoming passivity. Order what is right. The easy-going posture in the first clause is not permission to stop asking for anything.

And the third handles what happens when the second one meets resistance from someone not interested in a conversation. Turn away. Not argue better. Not win. Leave.

Verse 200 is the instruction for the moment it lands anyway. If an incitement from Satan provokes you, seek refuge in Allah. Nazgh is a jab, a prod, the small push that produces a disproportionate reaction. And the response prescribed is not restraint. It is relocation.

Verse 201 then describes what this looks like in a person who has built the habit. When a visit from Satan touches them, they remember, and then they are seeing. Three stages, and the middle one is the whole thing. Touch, remembrance, sight. Nothing in the verse says the touch stops coming. What changes is the interval between the touch and the seeing.

Verse 202 gives the alternative in one line. And their brothers pull them deeper into error, and then they do not stop short. The word for the other party’s help is a pulling, extending, drawing out. It never reaches a natural stopping point.

Verses 204 and 205 give the last two practices. When the Quran is recited, listen and be silent. And remember your Lord within yourself, in humility and in fear, without raising your voice, in the mornings and the evenings. Both are about volume. One asks you to lower yours so something else can be heard. The other says the remembrance does not need to be audible to count.

And then verse 206, and the chapter closes where it opened. Part One began with a command to prostrate and one creature who would not. Two hundred and six verses later, the last word of the chapter is that those who are with your Lord are not too arrogant to worship Him, and to Him they prostrate. The reader who has read the whole chapter is now asked to do the one thing the whole chapter has been about.

Structural Summary

Verses One Hundred and Seventy-Two to Two Hundred and Six. The Covenant Before Anyone Was Born.

A question asked and answered before anyone was born, closing two exits. A man who came out of the signs the way an animal comes out of its skin. Panting that does not depend on the weather. Faculties issued and unused, measured against cattle. Names given for calling. A slow approach made of uninterrupted success. A prophet stating what he does not know and offering his own life as the proof. A promise made in a pregnancy and redirected at the birth. Objects audited for feet, hands, eyes and ears. Eye contact with nothing behind it. Three instructions in six words. A jab answered by relocation rather than restraint. Two commands about volume. And a chapter that opened on a refusal to prostrate, closing on a prostration.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 199. The verse says take what is easily given. Identify the person you have been trying to extract something from that they have never offered freely. Stop asking for it. Accept what they do give.

Verse 201. The verse puts remembrance between the touch and the seeing. Next time a small provocation produces a disproportionate reaction in you, say a’udhu billahi min ash-shaytan ir-rajim out loud before you respond. Out loud, not internally.

Verse 205. The verse asks for remembrance without a raised voice, mornings and evenings. Take two minutes at each end of the day this week, silently, with no phone in your hand.
