The Surah · Verses 103 to 171
Summa ba'asnaa mim ba'dihim Moosaa bi Aayaatinaaa ilaa Fir'awana wa mala'ihee fazalamoo bihaa fanzur kaifa kaana 'aaqibatul mufsideen
Then after them We raised Musa with Our signs to Pharaoh and his assembly, and they wronged them. So look how the end was for those who spread corruption.
Wa qaala Moosaa yaa Fir'awnu inee Rasoolum mir Rabbil 'aalameen
And Musa said, Pharaoh, I am a messenger from the Lord of all worlds.
Haqeequn 'alaaa al laaa aqoola 'alal laahi illal haqq; qad ji'tukum bibaiyinatim mir Rabbikum fa arsil ma'iya Baneee Israaa'eel
Bound to say nothing about Allah except the truth. I have come to you with a clear proof from your Lord, so send the children of Israel with me.
Qaala in kunta ji'ta bi Aayatin faati bihaaa in kunta minas saadiqeen
He said, if you have come with a sign, then bring it, if you are of the truthful.
Qa alqaa 'asaahu fa izaa hiya su'baanum mubeen
So he threw his staff, and it was a clear serpent.
Wa naza'a yadahoo fa izaa hiya baidaaa'u linnaazireen
And he drew out his hand, and it was white to those looking.
Qaalal mala-u min qawmi Fir'awna inna haazaa lasaa hirun 'aleem
The assembly of Pharaoh's people said, this is a learned magician.
Yureedu ai yukhrijakum min ardikum famaazaa taamuroon
He wants to drive you out of your land. So what do you advise.
Qaalooo arjih wa akhaahu wa arsil filmadaaa'ini haashireen
They said, delay him and his brother, and send gatherers into the cities.
Yaatooka bikulli saahirin 'aleem
To bring you every learned magician.
Wa jaaa'as saharatu Fir'awna qaaloo inna lanaa la ajjran in kunnaa nahnul ghaalibeen
And the magicians came to Pharaoh. They said, will there be a reward for us if we are the winners.
Qaala na'am wa innakum laminal muqarrabeen
He said, yes, and you will be of those brought near.
Qaaloo yaa Moosaaa immaaa an tulqiya wa immaaa an nakoona nahnul mulqeen
They said, Musa, either you throw, or we will be the ones who throw.
Qaala alqoo falam maaa alqaw saharooo a'yunannaasi wastarhaboohum wa jaaa'oo bisihrin 'azeem
He said, throw. So when they threw, they bewitched the eyes of the people and struck fear into them, and they produced great magic.
Wa awhainaaa ilaa Moosaaa an alqi 'asaaka fa izaa hiya talqafu maa yaafikoon
And We revealed to Musa, throw your staff. And it swallowed what they were faking.
So the truth landed and what they were doing was voided.
Faghuliboo hunaalika wanqalaboo saaghireen
So they were defeated there, and they turned back humbled.
Wa ulqiyas saharatu saajideen
And the magicians were thrown down prostrating.
Qaaloo aamannaa bi Rabbil 'aalameen
They said, we believe in the Lord of all worlds.
Rabbi Moosaa wa Haaroon
The Lord of Musa and Harun.
Qaala Fir'awnu aamantum bihee qabla an aazana lakum; inna haaza lamakrum makartumoohu filmadeenati litukhrijoo minhaaa ahlahaa fasawfa ta'almoon
Pharaoh said, you believed in him before I gave you permission. This is a scheme you plotted in the city to drive its people out of it. You will come to know.
I will cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify all of you.
Qaaloo innaaa ilaa Rabbinaa munqaliboon
They said, we are returning to our Lord.
Wa maa tanqimu minnaaa illaaa an aamannaa bi Aayaati Rabbinaa lammaa jaaa'atnaa; Rabbanaaa afrigh 'alainaa sabranw wa tawaffanaa muslimeen
And you resent us only because we believed in the signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour patience on us, and take us in submission.
Wa qaalal mala-u min qawmi Fir'awna atazaru Moosaa wa qawmahoo liyufsidoo fil ardi wa yazaraka wa aalihatak; qaala sanuqattilu abnaaa 'ahum wa nastahyee nisaaa'ahum wa innaa fawqahum qaahiroon
And the assembly of Pharaoh's people said, will you leave Musa and his people to spread corruption in the land, and to abandon you and your gods. He said, we will kill their sons and spare their women, and we are dominant over them.
Qaala Moosaa liqawmihis ta'eenoo billaahi wasbiroo innal arda lillaahi yoorisuhaa mai yashaaa'u min 'ibaadihee wal 'aaqibatu lilmuttaqeen
Musa said to his people, seek help from Allah and be patient. The earth belongs to Allah. He gives it as inheritance to whom He wills of His servants. And the outcome is for those conscious of Him.
Qaaloo oozeenaa min qabli an taatiyanaa wa mim ba'di maa ji'tanaa; qaala 'asaa Rabbukum ai yuhlika 'aduwwakum wa yastakhli fakum fil ardi fayanzura kaifa ta'maloon
They said, we were harmed before you came to us and after you came to us. He said, perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, and then see how you act.
And We seized the people of Pharaoh with years of drought and a loss of fruits, so that they might take heed.
Fa izaa jaaa'at humul hasanatu qaaloo lanaa haazihee wa in tusibhum saiyi'atuny yattaiyaroo bi Moosaa wa mam ma'ah; alaaa innamaa taaa'iruhum 'indal laahi wa laakinna aksarahum laa ya'lamoon
So when good came to them they said, this is ours. And if something bad struck them, they read it as an omen from Musa and those with him. Their omen is only with Allah, but most of them do not know.
Wa qaaloo mahmaa taatinaa bihee min Aayatil litasharanaa bihaa famaa nahnu laka bimu'mineen
And they said, whatever sign you bring us to bewitch us with, we are not going to believe in you.
Fa arsalnaa 'alaihimut toofaana waljaraada walqum mala waddafaadi'a waddama Aayaatim mufassalaatin fastakbaroo wa kaanoo qawmam mujrimeen
So We sent on them the flood and the locusts and the lice and the frogs and the blood, as signs laid out in detail. And they were arrogant, and they were a criminal people.
Wa lammaa waqa'a 'alaihimur rijzu qaaloo ya Moosad-u lanaa rabbaka bimaa 'ahida 'indaka la'in kashafta 'annar rijza lanu 'minanna laka wa lanursilanna ma'aka Banee Israaa'eel
And when the punishment fell on them they said, Musa, call on your Lord for us by the covenant He has with you. If you remove the punishment from us, we will certainly believe you and we will certainly send the children of Israel with you.
Falammaa kashafnaa 'anhumur rijza ilaaa ajalin hum baalighoohu izaa hum yankusoon
Then when We removed the punishment from them, for a term they were to reach, they broke their word.
Fantaqamnaa minhum fa aghraqnaahum fil yammi bi annahum kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa wa kaanoo 'anhaa ghaafileen
So We took retribution from them and drowned them in the sea, because they called Our signs a lie and were heedless of them.
And We gave the people who had been considered weak the east of the land and its west, which We had blessed. And the best word of your Lord was fulfilled on the children of Israel for their patience. And We destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had built and what they had been raising up.
Wa jaawaznaa bi Banneee Israaa'eelal bahra fa ataw 'alaa qawminy ya'kufoona 'alaaa asnaamil lahum; qaaloo yaa Moosaj'al lanaa ilaahan kamaa lahum aalihah; qaala innakum qawmun tajhaloon
And We took the children of Israel across the sea, and they came upon a people devoted to idols of theirs. They said, Musa, make a god for us like the gods they have. He said, you are an ignorant people.
Innaa haaa'ulaaa'i mutabbarum maa hum feehi wa baatilum maa kaanoo ya'maloon
What these people are in is destroyed, and what they have been doing is false.
Qaala a-ghairal laahi abgheekum ilaahanw wa Huwa faddalakum 'alal 'aalameen
He said, shall I seek a god for you other than Allah, when He preferred you above all the worlds.
Wa iz anjainaakum min Aali Fir'awna yasoomoo nakum sooo'al 'azaab, yuqattiloona abnaaa'akum wa yastahyoona nisaaa'akum; wa fee zaalikum balaaa'um mir Rabbikum 'azeem
And when We saved you from the people of Pharaoh, who were inflicting the worst punishment on you, killing your sons and sparing your women. And in that was a great test from your Lord.
Wa waa'adnaa Moosaa salaaseena lailatanw wa at mamnaahaa bi'ashrim fatamma meeqaatu Rabbihee arba'eena lailah; wa qaala Moosaa liakheehi Haaroonakh lufnee fee qawmee wa aslih wa laa tattabi' sabeelal mufsideen
And We appointed thirty nights for Musa and completed them with ten, so the appointed time of his Lord was completed at forty nights. And Musa said to his brother Harun, take my place among my people, and set things right, and do not follow the way of those who spread corruption.
Wa lammaa jaaa'a Moosa limeeqaatinaa wa kallamahoo Rabbuhoo qaala Rabbi arineee anzur ilaik; qaala lan taraanee wa laakininzur ilal jabali fa inistaqarra makaanahoo faswfa taraanee; falammaa tajallaa Rabbuhoo liljabali ja'alahoo dakkanw wa kharra Moosaa sa'iqaa; falammaaa afaaqa qaala Subhaanaka tubtu ilaika wa ana awwalul mu'mineen
And when Musa came to Our appointed time and his Lord spoke to him, he said, my Lord, show me, let me look at You. He said, you will not see Me, but look at the mountain. If it stays in its place, then you will see Me. So when his Lord appeared to the mountain, He made it collapse, and Musa fell unconscious. Then when he recovered he said, glory be to You, I turn to You, and I am the first of the believers.
Qaala yaa Moosaaa innis tafaituka 'alan naasi bi Risaalaatee wa bi kalaamee fakhuz maaa aataituka wa kum minash shaakireen
He said, Musa, I have chosen you above the people with My messages and My speech. So take what I have given you and be of the grateful.
Wa katabnaa lahoo fil alwaahi minkulli shai'immaw 'izaanw wa tafseelal likulli shai'in fakhuzhaa biquwwatinw waamur qawmaka yaakhuzoo bi ahsanihaa; wa ooreekum daaral faasiqeen
And We wrote for him on the tablets, of everything, an instruction and a detailing of everything. So take it with strength and order your people to take the best of it. I will show you the home of the defiantly disobedient.
Sa asrifu 'an Aayaatiyal lazeena yatakabbaroona fil ardi bighairil haqq; wa iny-yaraw kulla Aayatil laa yu'minoo bihaa wa iny-yaraw sabeelar rushdi laa yattakhizoohu sabeelanw wa iny-yaraw sabeelal ghaiyi yatta khizoohu sabeelaa; zaalika bi annahum kazzaboo bi Aayaatinaa wa kaanoo 'anhaa ghaafileen
I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant on the earth without right. And if they see every sign they will not believe in it. And if they see the way of right guidance they will not take it as a way, and if they see the way of error they will take it as a way. That is because they called Our signs a lie and were heedless of them.

And the people of Musa, after he left, took a calf from their ornaments, a body that made a lowing sound. Did they not see that it did not speak to them and did not guide them to a way. They took it, and they were wrongdoers.

And when it fell into their hands and they saw that they had gone astray, they said, if our Lord does not have mercy on us and forgive us, we will be of the losers.

And when Musa returned to his people, angry and grieving, he said, how bad is what you did in my place after me. Did you rush ahead of the command of your Lord. And he threw down the tablets and seized his brother's head, pulling him toward himself. He said, son of my mother, the people overpowered me and were close to killing me. So do not let the enemies rejoice over me, and do not place me with the wrongdoing people.

And when the anger in Musa went quiet, he took up the tablets. And in their writing was guidance and mercy for those who are in awe of their Lord.

And Musa chose seventy men from his people for Our appointed time. Then when the earthquake seized them he said, my Lord, if You had willed You could have destroyed them before, and me with them. Will You destroy us for what the foolish among us did. This is only Your test. You let go astray by it whom You will and guide whom You will. You are our Protector, so forgive us and have mercy on us. And You are the best of those who forgive.

And write for us good in this world and in the Hereafter. We have turned to You. He said, My punishment, I strike with it whom I will. And My mercy encompasses everything. So I will write it for those who are conscious of Me and give the zakah and who believe in Our signs.

Those who follow the Messenger, the unlettered Prophet, whom they find written with them in the Torah and the Gospel. He orders them to what is right and forbids them what is wrong, and makes lawful for them the good things and forbids them the foul things, and removes from them their burden and the chains that were upon them. So those who believed in him and honored him and supported him and followed the light that was sent down with him, those are the ones who succeed.

And We divided them into twelve tribes, as communities. And We revealed to Musa when his people asked him for water, strike the rock with your staff. And twelve springs burst out of it. Each group of people knew their drinking place. And We shaded them with clouds and sent down on them the manna and the quail. Eat from the good things We have provided you. And they did not wrong Us, but they were wronging themselves.

And ask them about the town that was by the sea, when they crossed the limit on the Sabbath, when their fish came to them on the day of their Sabbath, out in the open, and on the day they did not keep the Sabbath they did not come to them. In this way We tested them for the disobedience they had been committing.

Then after them came a generation who inherited the Book. They take the gain of this lower life and say, it will be forgiven us. And if a similar gain comes to them, they take it. And when We raised the mountain above them as though it were a canopy, and they thought it was going to fall on them. Take what We have given you with strength, and remember what is in it, so that you may become conscious.
Tafsir
The Commentary
Overview
Musa and What Came After.
This is the longest stretch of narrative in the chapter, and its subject is not really Pharaoh. Pharaoh is finished by verse 136. Everything after that is about the people who were rescued.
The first movement is the contest, and the men who lose it are the ones the passage is actually about. Professional magicians who arrived that morning negotiating their fee, and by the afternoon were being threatened with mutilation and answering, we are returning to our Lord. Nothing in the record moves faster than that.
Then the rescue, and then the interval. One verse after crossing the sea, the rescued people ask for an idol like the ones they have just walked past. Forty days later they are worshipping a metal calf made out of their own jewellery.
And the last section moves from that generation to the ones who came after, ending on a description that should stop any reader who owns a copy of a scripture. They inherited the Book. They studied what is in it. And they take the gain of this lower life and say it will be forgiven, and then take it again when it is offered again.
Verses 103 to 137
The Magicians Who Changed Sides in One Morning.
Verse 113 tells you exactly who these men were before the contest. Will there be a reward for us if we are the winners. They came for the money, and verse 114 raises the offer to include proximity to power. These are not seekers.
Verse 116 is precise about what their craft actually did. They bewitched the eyes of the people and struck fear into them. The staffs did not become snakes. The audience was worked on. Which means the magicians, standing on the field, knew exactly what they had produced and exactly what they had not.
That is why verse 120 reads the way it does. The magicians were thrown down prostrating. The verb is passive. They did not decide to kneel. They were the only people present qualified to know that what Musa did was not what they did, and the knowledge put them on the ground.
Then verse 123, and Pharaoh’s first objection is the one that gives him away. You believed in him before I gave you permission. Not, you are wrong. You did not ask me. The claim being defended is the right to approve what people conclude.
Verse 125 is the whole conversion in five words. We are returning to our Lord. Threatened with dismemberment and crucifixion, and the reply is not defiance and not a plea. It is a statement about direction. And their prayer in verse 126 asks for two things, patience poured on them and to be taken in submission. Not rescue.
Verse 129 is the exchange every long-suffering community eventually has. They said, we were harmed before you came and after you came. A fair complaint. The answer is not a promise of comfort. Perhaps your Lord will destroy your enemy and make you successors in the land, and then see how you act. The rescue is announced as the beginning of the next examination, not the end of the current one.
Verse 131 describes an accounting method still in daily use. When good came they said, this is ours. When bad came they blamed Musa and those with him. Credit inward, blame outward, applied consistently, and the verse names it as the reason they learned nothing from either.
And verses 134 and 135 are the pattern in miniature. Under the punishment, a specific promise with two clauses. The moment it is lifted, they broke their word. The sincerity during the crisis was real. It just had no load-bearing capacity outside it.
Verses 138 to 156
Show Me, Let Me Look at You.
Verse 138 is one verse after the sea. They came upon a people devoted to idols and said, Musa, make a god for us like the gods they have. Not a lapse under pressure. A request, made calmly, by people whose deliverance was still wet on them. What they wanted was something visible, because the thing they had just witnessed had already begun to feel abstract.
Verse 143 is the request of a man who has been spoken to directly and wants more. My Lord, show me, let me look at You. The answer refuses the request and then does something more generous than refusing. Look at the mountain. If it stays in its place, then you will see Me. He is not told he is unworthy. He is shown, on a mountain, what the request would cost. And when he recovers, his response is not disappointment. Glory be to You, I turn to You, and I am the first of the believers.
Verse 145 gives the instruction that governs how to hold a revelation. Take it with strength, and order your people to take the best of it. Both halves matter. Strength in the holding, and the best of it in the practice.
Verse 146 then gives the clearest diagnostic in the chapter for a heart that has closed. If they see every sign they will not believe. If they see the way of right guidance they will not take it. If they see the way of error they will take it. The faculty of recognition is intact throughout. They see all three. What has failed is the connection between seeing and moving.
Verse 148 asks the question nobody asked at the time. Did they not see that it did not speak to them and did not guide them to a way. The calf’s disqualification was available by inspection. It was made of their own ornaments, by their own hands, and it produced one sound.
Verse 150 records the return, and it does not sanitize it. Angry and grieving. The tablets thrown down. His brother seized by the head and pulled toward him. And Harun’s answer begins, son of my mother, which is the appeal to the closest relation they have rather than to his own authority as a prophet. Then verse 151, and Musa’s prayer begins with himself. My Lord, forgive me and my brother. The man who was in the right about the calf asks for his own forgiveness first, for how he handled being right.
Verse 154 has one of the most exact phrases in the Quran about anger. When the anger in Musa went quiet. Anger is described as something that was speaking, and then stopped. Only then does he pick the tablets back up.
And verse 156 gives the answer to Musa’s prayer, which turns out to be larger than the prayer. My punishment, I strike with it whom I will. And My mercy encompasses everything. The two are not stated as equals. The punishment is directed at some. The mercy has no boundary named for it at all.
Verses 157 to 171
The Generation That Inherited the Book.
Verse 157 describes what the Messenger does for people, and two of the items are relief rather than requirement. He removes from them their burden and the chains that were upon them. Whatever else the message is, the passage insists that part of its function is to take weight off.
Verse 159 refuses a generalization the reader may be forming. And among the people of Musa is a community that guides by the truth and does justice by it. Placed immediately after a long account of failures, and before more of them. The chapter will not let a record of failure become a verdict on a people.
Verses 163 to 166 give the Sabbath account, and the test is described with unusual care. The fish came out in the open on the day it was forbidden, and did not come on the days it was permitted. The temptation was engineered to be exact. Anyone who has been offered precisely the thing he is not allowed to take, at precisely the hour he is not allowed to take it, will recognise the design.
Verse 164 records a conversation among the people who were not doing the wrong. One group asks the other, why do you instruct a people whom Allah is going to destroy anyway. The answer is two things and the order matters. As an excuse before your Lord, and so that they may become conscious. The first reason is about the speaker’s own record. The second is about the outcome. Even if the second never arrives, the first still stands.
Then verse 165 names two outcomes. We saved those who forbade the wrong, and We seized those who did wrong. The group that neither did the wrong nor spoke against it is not assigned an outcome in the text. Readers have argued about them for centuries and the verse declines to settle it, which is itself worth sitting with.
And verse 169 is the verse for anyone with a copy of scripture in the house. A generation inherited the Book. They take the gain of this lower life and say, it will be forgiven us. And when the same gain is offered again, they take it again. The forgiveness is being used as a line of credit rather than a door. And the verse closes the escape route in six words: and they studied what is in it. They were not ignorant of the ruling. They knew it, took the money, and applied the mercy to themselves in advance.
Verse 170 gives the alternative in one line. Those who hold fast to the Book and establish the prayer. And it calls them muslihun, those who set things right, which is what holding it fast actually looks like from outside.
Structural Summary
Verses One Hundred and Three to One Hundred and Seventy-One. Musa and What Came After.
Men who negotiated a fee in the morning and answered a crucifixion threat by the afternoon. A king whose first objection was that nobody asked his permission. A rescue announced as the start of the next test. Credit taken inward and blame sent outward. A promise made under punishment and dropped when it lifted. An idol requested one verse after the sea. A request to see, refused on a mountain. Anger described as something that went quiet. Mercy stated without a boundary. A community that guides, named in the middle of the failures. Fish arriving on exactly the forbidden day. A group that spoke up, a group that did the wrong, and a third left unassigned. And an inheritance of scripture spent as credit.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 131. The verse describes credit taken inward and blame sent outward. Review the last month. Name one good outcome you have been quietly taking credit for and one bad one you have assigned to someone else. Correct both attributions out loud.
Verse 151. The verse has the man who was in the right asking forgiveness first for how he handled it. Think of the last argument you won. Apologize this week for the manner, without retracting the substance.
Verse 169. The verse catches people spending forgiveness in advance. Name the thing you keep doing on the understanding that it will be forgiven. Stop that one thing for thirty days.
