The Surah · Verses 41 to 75

Wa'lamooo annamaa ghanimtum min sha'in fa anna lillaahi khumusahoo wa lir Rasooli wa lizil qurba walyataamaa walmasaakeeni wabnis sabeeli in kuntum aamantum billaahi wa maaa anzalnaa 'ala 'abdinaa yawmal Furqaani yawmaltaqal jam'aan; wal laahu 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadeer

And know that whatever you take as spoils, a fifth of it belongs to Allah and to the Messenger and to the near relatives and the orphans and the needy and the traveler, if you have believed in Allah and in what We sent down on Our servant on the day of distinction, the day the two forces met. And Allah is able to do all things.

Iz antum bil'udwatid dunyaa wa hum bil'udwatil quswaa warrakbu asfala minkum; wa law tawaa'attum lakhtalaftum fil mee'aadi wa laakil liyaqdiyal laahu amran kaana maf'oolal liyahlika man halaka 'am baiyinatinw wa yahyaa man haiya 'am baiyinah; wa innal laaha la Samee'un 'Aleem

When you were on the near side of the valley and they were on the far side, and the caravan was below you. And if you had made an appointment together, you would have differed about the time. But so that Allah would settle a matter already decided, so that whoever perished would perish on clear evidence, and whoever lived would live on clear evidence. And Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Iz yureekahumul laahu fee manaamika qaleela; wa law araakahum kaseeral lafashiltum wa latanaaza'tum fil amri wa laakinnal laaha sallam; innahoo 'aleemum bizaatis sudoor

When Allah showed them to you in your sleep as few. And if He had shown them to you as many, you would have lost heart and disputed about the matter. But Allah kept you safe. He knows what is in the chests.

Wa iz yureekumoohum izil taqaitum feee a'yunikum qaleelanw wa yuqallilukum feee a'yunihim liyaqdiyal laahu amran kaana maf'oolaa; wa ilal laahi turja'ul umoor

And when He showed them to you, when you met, as few in your eyes, and made you few in their eyes, so that Allah would settle a matter already decided. And to Allah all matters return.

Yaaa aiyuhal lazeena aamanooo izaa laqeetum fi'atan fasbutoo wazkurul laaha kaseeral la'allakum tuflihoon

You who believe, when you meet a force, hold firm, and remember Allah much, so that you may succeed.

Wa atee'ul laaha wa Rasoolahoo wa laa tanaaza'oo fatafshaloo wa tazhaba reehukum wasbiroo; innal laaha ma'as saabireen

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute with one another, or you will lose heart and your wind will go. And be patient. Allah is with the patient.

Wa laa takoonoo kallazeena kharajoo min diyaarihim bataranw wa ri'aaa'an naasi wa yasuddoona 'an sabeelil laah; wallaahu bimaa ya'maloona muheet

And do not be like those who came out from their homes in arrogance and to be seen by people, turning others from the way of Allah. And Allah encompasses what they do.

Wa iz zaiyana lahumush shaitaanu a'ma alahum wa qaala laa ghaaliba lakumul yawma minan naasi wa innee jaarul lakum falammaa taraaa'atil fi'ataani nakasa 'alaa aqibaihi wa qaala innee bareee'um minkum innee araa maa laa tarawna inneee akhaaful laah; wallaahu shadeedul 'iqaab

And when Satan made their deeds look good to them and said, no one among people can overcome you today, and I am a protector for you. Then when the two forces came in sight of each other, he turned back on his heels and said, I am free of you. I see what you do not see. I fear Allah. And Allah is severe in punishment.

Iz yaqoolul munaafiqoona wallazeena fee quloobihim maradun gharra haaa'ulaaa'i deenuhum; wa mai yatawakkal 'alal laahi fa innal laaha 'azee zun Hakeem

When the hypocrites and those in whose hearts is sickness said, their religion has deceived these people. And whoever relies on Allah, Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Wa law taraaa iz yatawaf fal lazeena kafarul malaaa'ikatu yadriboona wujoohahum wa adbaarahum wa zooqoo 'azaabal hareeq

And if you could see when the angels take the souls of those who disbelieved, striking their faces and their backs, and taste the punishment of the burning.

Zaalika bimaa qaddamat aideekum wa anal laaha laisa bizallaamil lil 'abeed

That is for what your hands sent ahead, and because Allah is not unjust to His servants.

Kadaabi Aali Fir'awna wal lazeena min qablihim; kafaroo bi Aayaatil laahi fa akhazahu mul laahu bizunoobihim; innal laaha qawiyyun shadeedul 'iqaab

Like the way of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They rejected the signs of Allah, so Allah seized them for their sins. Allah is Strong, severe in punishment.

Zaalika bi annal laaha lam yaku mughaiyiran ni matan an'amahaa 'alaa qawmin hattaa yughaiyiroo maa bianfusihim wa annallaaha samee un 'Aleem

That is because Allah does not change a favor He has given a people until they change what is in themselves, and because Allah is Hearing, Knowing.

Kadaabi Aali Fir'awna wallazeena min qablihim; kazzaboo bi Aayaati Rabbihim faahlaknaahum bizunoobihim wa aghraqnaa Aala Fir'awn; wa kullun kaanoo zaalimeen

Like the way of the people of Pharaoh and those before them. They called the signs of their Lord a lie, so We destroyed them for their sins, and We drowned the people of Pharaoh. And all of them were wrongdoers.

Inna sharrad dawaaabbi 'indal laahil lazeena kafaroo fahum laa yu'minoon

The worst of creatures with Allah are those who disbelieved, and they do not believe.

Allazeena'aahatta min hum summa yanqudoona 'ahdahum fee kulli marratinw wa hum laa yattaqoon

Those with whom you made a treaty, then they break their agreement every time, and they are not conscious of Allah.

Fa immaa tasqafannahum fil harbi fasharrid bihim man khalfahum la'allahum yazzakkaroon

So if you come upon them in war, scatter with them those behind them, so that they may take heed.

Wa immaa takhaafana min qawmin khiyaanatan fambiz ilaihim 'alaa sawaaa'; innal laaha laayuhibbul khaaa'ineen

And if you fear treachery from a people, throw their treaty back to them on equal terms. Allah does not love the treacherous.

Wa laa yahsabannal lazeena kafaroo sabaqooo; innahum laa yu'jizoon

And let not those who disbelieved think they have gotten ahead. They will not escape.

Wa a'iddoo lahum mastata'tum min quwwatinw wa mirribaatil khaili turhiboona bihee 'aduwwal laahi wa 'aduwwakum wa aakhareena min doonihim laa ta'lamoo nahum Allaahu ya'lamuhum; wa maa tunfiqoo min shai'in fee sabeelil laahi yuwaf failaikum wa antum laa tuzlamoon

And prepare against them whatever force you are able, and tethered horses, to deter with it the enemy of Allah and your enemy, and others besides them you do not know. Allah knows them. And whatever you spend in the way of Allah will be repaid to you in full, and you will not be wronged.

Wa in janahoo lissalmi fajnah lahaa wa tawakkal 'alal laah; innahoo Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem

And if they incline to peace, then incline to it, and rely on Allah. He is the Hearing, the Knowing.

Wa iny yureedooo any-yakhda'ooka fainna hasbakal laah; Huwal lazeee aiyadaka binasrihee wa bilmu'mineen

And if they want to deceive you, then Allah is enough for you. He is the One who strengthened you with His help and with the believers.

Wa allafa baina quloobihim; law anfaqta maa fil ardi jamee'am maaa allafta baina quloobihim wa laakinnallaaha allafa bainahum; innaahoo 'Azeezun Hakeem

And He joined their hearts together. If you had spent everything on earth you could not have joined their hearts, but Allah joined them. He is Mighty, Wise.

Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu hasbukal laahu wa manittaba 'aka minal mu'mineen

Prophet, Allah is enough for you, and for whoever follows you of the believers.

Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu harridil mu'mineena 'alal qitaal; iny-yakum minkum 'ishroona saabiroona yaghliboo mi'atayn; wa iny-yakum minkum min'atuny yaghlibooo alfam minal lazeena kafaroo bi anahum qawmul laa yafqahoon

Prophet, urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty of you who are patient, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are a hundred of you, they will overcome a thousand of those who disbelieved, because they are a people who do not understand.

Al'aana khaffafal laahu 'ankum wa 'alima anna feekum da'faa; fa-iny yakum minkum mi'atun saabiratuny yaghliboo mi'atayn; wa iny-yakum minkum alfuny yaghlibooo alfaini bi iznil laah; wallaahu ma'as saabireen

Now Allah has lightened it for you, and He knows there is weakness in you. So if there are a hundred of you who are patient, they will overcome two hundred. And if there are a thousand of you, they will overcome two thousand by the permission of Allah. And Allah is with the patient.

Maa kaana li Nabiyyin ai yakoona lahooo asraa hatta yuskhina fil ard; tureedoona aradad dunyaa wallaahu yureedul Aakhirah; wallaahu 'Azeezun Hakeem

It was not for a prophet to have captives until he had made his ground firm. You want the gain of this world, and Allah wants the Hereafter. And Allah is Mighty, Wise.

Law laa Kitaabum minal laahi sabaqa lamassakum fee maaa akhaztum 'azaabun 'azeem

If not for a decree from Allah that had already gone ahead, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took.

Fakuloo mimaa ghanimtum halaalan taiyibaa; watta qullaah; innal laaha Ghafoorur Raheem

So eat from what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good. And be conscious of Allah. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu qul liman feee aideekum minal asraaa iny-ya lamillaahu fee quloobikum khairany yu'tikum khayram mimmaaa ukhiza minkum wa yaghfir lakum; wallaahu Ghafoorur Raheem

Prophet, say to the captives in your hands, if Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you. And Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Wa iny-yureedoo khiyaa nataka faqad khaanullaaha min qablu fa amkana minhum; wallaahu 'aleemum Hakeem

And if they want to betray you, they have already betrayed Allah before, and He gave power over them. And Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Innal lazeena aamanoo wa haajaroo wa jaahadoo bi amwaalihim wa anfusihim fee sabeelil laahi wallazeena aawaw wa nasarooo ulaaa'ika ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; wallazeena aamanoo wa lam yuhaajiroo maa lakum minw walaayatihim min shai'in hatta yuhaajiroo; wa inistan sarookum fid deeni fa'alaiku munnasru illaa 'alaa qawmim bainakum wa bainahum meesaaq; wallaahu bimaa ta'maloona Baseer

Those who believed and migrated and struggled with their wealth and their selves in the way of Allah, and those who gave shelter and helped, those are allies of one another. And those who believed and did not migrate, you owe them no protection until they migrate. And if they ask you for help in the religion, then help is due from you, except against a people between you and whom there is a treaty. And Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Wallazeena kafaroo ba'duhum awliyaaa'u ba'd; illaa taf'aloohu takun fitnatun fil ardi wa fasaadun kabeer

And those who disbelieved are allies of one another. If you do not do it, there will be persecution in the land and great corruption.

And those who believed afterward and migrated and struggled alongside you, those are of you. And those of blood relation are nearer to one another in the record of Allah. Allah is Knowing of all things.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What This Part Means

Overview

What a Community Does After It Wins.

The question from verse 1 is finally answered in verse 41, and by the time it arrives the men asking it have been shown forty verses of why the victory was not theirs to divide in the first place.

Then the chapter does something more useful than settle the accounts. It describes the machinery. Two armies that could not have coordinated a meeting if they had tried. A dream that showed the enemy smaller than it was. Two forces each made to look few in the other's eyes, at the moment of contact, in opposite directions. And a whispered guarantee of victory that withdrew the second the fighting started.

Verse 53 states the law that governs the whole thing. Allah does not change a favor He has given a people until they change what is in themselves. The chapter is addressed to people who have just been given something.

And then the section that surprises anyone who has been told what this chapter is. Prepare everything you can, and if they incline to peace, incline to it. Take the risk of being deceived. A correction issued to the community over the treatment of captives. And a message sent to the prisoners themselves offering them better than what was taken from them.

Verses 41 to 54

A Matter Already Decided.

Verse 41 calls Badr yawm al-furqan, the day of distinction, the day the two forces met. The same word appeared in verse 29 as the criterion given to a man who is conscious of Allah. A day that separated things, given the same name as the faculty that separates them.

Verse 42 describes the terrain with unusual precision. You on the near side, they on the far side, the caravan below you. Then the observation that makes the geography matter: if you had made an appointment together, you would have differed about the time. Neither side arranged this. Both arrived at a place neither chose, and the verse states the purpose plainly, so that whoever perished would perish on clear evidence, and whoever lived would live on clear evidence. Nobody was to be able to say afterward that they never saw enough.

Verses 43 and 44 describe perception being managed in three separate directions. The enemy shown as few in a dream, with the reason given openly: if He had shown them as many, you would have lost heart and disputed. Then at the meeting, they appear few to you and you appear few to them. The first reduction keeps you from fleeing. The second keeps them from preparing. Both sides are looking at the same field and neither is seeing it.

Verse 46 gives the most quoted phrase in the chapter and it is worth taking literally. Do not dispute with one another, or you will lose heart and your wind will go. Rih is wind. It is what fills a sail. Internal argument is described as removing the thing that was carrying you, not as damaging morale in a vague way. The order is exact: disputing first, then losing heart, then the wind gone.

Verse 48 records Satan's contribution and it is a business model. He made their deeds look good, promised them nobody could overcome them, and offered himself as protector. Then when the two forces came into sight he turned back on his heels and said, I am free of you, I see what you do not see, I fear Allah. The guarantee lasted exactly until the moment it was needed.

And verse 53 is the law underneath all of it. Allah does not change a favor He has given a people until they change what is in themselves. The same principle as Ar-Ra'd 11, stated from the other direction. There the condition preceded improvement. Here it precedes loss. The inner state moves first in both cases.

Verses 55 to 66

Incline to It.

Verse 58 sets a standard of conduct that is easy to miss. If you fear treachery from a people, throw their treaty back to them on equal terms. Not act on the suspicion quietly. Not keep the arrangement running while preparing against it. Announce the end of it openly first, so both sides know where they stand at the same moment. The verse closes with Allah does not love the treacherous, which is the reason.

Verse 60 orders preparation of whatever force is available, and states the purpose as deterrence. The word is about producing enough weight that the thing does not have to be used. And it ends on spending, with a guarantee of repayment in full.

Then verse 61, immediately after. And if they incline to peace, then incline to it, and rely on Allah. The two verses are adjacent for a reason. Prepare fully, and take the offer the moment it comes. The strength in verse 60 is what makes the acceptance in verse 61 something other than surrender.

Verse 62 handles the obvious objection. And if they want to deceive you, then Allah is enough for you. The risk of being deceived is acknowledged and accepted rather than argued away. The instruction is not that they will be honest. It is that you take it anyway, and the guarantee covers the downside.

Verse 63 then names what could not have been bought. If you had spent everything on earth you could not have joined their hearts, but Allah joined them. Said about tribes with a feud behind them that no amount of money or negotiation had ever resolved. Anyone who has tried to purchase unity in a family or an organization knows the accuracy of the claim.

Verses 65 and 66 are the most humane pair in the chapter. First the standard, twenty patient men against two hundred. Then, in the very next verse, Now Allah has lightened it for you, and He knows there is weakness in you. The ratio drops from ten to one down to two to one. The concession is written into the text itself, permanently, alongside the standard it replaced, with the reason stated out loud. The weakness was not hidden and it was not held against them.

Verses 67 to 75

The Captives and the Joined Hearts.

Verses 67 and 68 are a correction issued to the whole community, including its leadership, about the decision to take captives at Badr. You want the gain of this world, and Allah wants the Hereafter. Then verse 68, if not for a decree from Allah that had already gone ahead, a great punishment would have touched you for what you took. The severity of the language is unusual, and the very next verse says, so eat from what you have taken as spoils, lawful and good. Corrected, forgiven, and permitted, in three consecutive verses.

Verse 70 is the one to sit with. Prophet, say to the captives in your hands, if Allah knows any good in your hearts, He will give you better than what was taken from you, and He will forgive you. Men taken prisoner after attacking, held pending ransom, and the message sent to them is an offer of something better than what they lost, plus forgiveness. Not an invitation to convert under pressure. A statement about what is available to them if there is any good in them at all.

Verses 72 to 75 then build the structure of the community out of two things and neither of them is blood. Those who believed and migrated and struggled, and those who gave shelter and helped. The ones who left everything and the ones who opened their homes. They are declared allies of one another, and verse 74 gives them the same phrase given to the believers in verse 4 of Part One: those are the believers in truth.

Verse 75 then adds the people who came later. Those who believed afterward and migrated and struggled alongside you, those are of you. The door is not closed on anyone who arrives after the founding generation.

And the final clause of the chapter returns blood to its place. Those of blood relation are nearer to one another in the record of Allah. The surah that spent seventy-four verses building a bond stronger than lineage ends by refusing to abolish lineage. Both hold. Neither cancels the other.

Structural Summary

Verses Forty-One to Seventy-Five. What a Community Does After It Wins.

The fifth set aside and the day named. Two armies at a meeting neither could have arranged. Perception managed in both directions at once. Wind leaving the sail of a divided people. A guarantee that withdrew at the moment of contact. A favor that stays until the inside changes. A treaty thrown back openly rather than broken quietly. Full preparation and immediate acceptance of peace. Hearts nothing could have bought. A standard lightened in the next verse with the reason stated. And a community built on migration and shelter, still leaving room for blood.

The Practice

Take It Into the Week

Verse 46. The verse says disputing removes your wind before it removes anything else. Name the argument currently running in your household or your work that you could end this week by conceding a point that does not actually matter to you. End it.

Verse 53. The verse places the inner change before the outer one, in both directions. Identify one favor in your life you have started handling carelessly. Restore the care before anything is taken.

Verse 61. The verse says take the peace when it is offered, and verse 62 says accept the risk that it is a trick. Someone has extended something to you that you have declined because you suspect the motive. Accept it this week.
