The Surah · Verses 111 to 165
Wa law annanaa nazzal naaa ilaihimul malaaa'ikata wa kallamahumul mawtaa wa hasharnaa 'alaihim kulla shai'in qubulam maa kaanoo liyu'minooo illaaa ai yashaaa'al laahu wa laakinna aksarahum yajhaloon
And even if We sent down the angels to them, and the dead spoke to them, and We gathered everything in front of them, they would not believe unless Allah willed. But most of them are ignorant.
Wa kazaalika ja'alnaa likulli nabiyyin 'aduwwan Shayaateenal insi waljinni yoohee ba'duhum ilaa ba'din zukhrufal qawli ghurooraa; wa law shaaa'a Rabbuka maa fa'aloohu fazarhum wa maa yaftaroon
And in this way We made for every prophet an enemy, devils among people and jinn, inspiring one another with decorated speech as deception. And if your Lord had willed they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent.
Wa litasghaaa ilaihi af'idatul lazeena laa yu'minoona bil Aakhirati wa liyardawhu wa liyaqtarifoo maa hum muqtarifoon
And so that the hearts of those who do not believe in the Hereafter would incline to it, and be pleased with it, and so they would earn what they are earning.
Afaghairal laahi abtaghee hakamanw wa Huwal lazee anzala ilaikumul Kitaaba mufassalaa; wallazeena atai naahumul Kitaaba ya'lamoona annahoo munazzalum mir Rabbika bilhaqqi falaa takoonanna minal mumtareen
Shall I seek a judge other than Allah, when He is the One who sent down to you the Book laid out in detail. And those We gave the Book know that it is sent down from your Lord with the truth. So do not be of those who waver.
Wa tammat Kalimatu Rabbika sidqanw wa 'adlaa; laa mubaddila li Kalimaatih; wa Huwas Samee'ul 'Aleem
And the word of your Lord is complete in truth and justice. There is no changing His words. And He is the Hearing, the Knowing.
Wa in tuti' aksara man fil ardi yudillooka 'an sabeelil laah; iny yattabi'oona illaz zanna wa in hum illaa yakhrusoon
And if you obey most of those on the earth, they will lead you away from the way of Allah. They follow only conjecture, and they only guess.
Inna rabbaka Huwa a'lamu mai yadillu 'an sabeelihee wa Huwa a'lamu bilmuhtadeen
Your Lord knows best who strays from His way, and He knows best the guided.
Fakuloo mimmmaa zukirasmul laahi 'alaihi in kuntum bi Aayaatihee mu'mineen
So eat from what the name of Allah has been mentioned over, if you are believers in His signs.
Wa maa lakum allaa taakuloo mimmaa zukirasmul laahi 'alaihi wa qad fassala lakum maa harrama 'alaikum illaa mad turirtum ilaih; wa inna kaseeral la yudilloona bi ahwaaa'ihim bighairi 'ilm; inna Rabbaka Huwa a'lamu bilmu'tadeen
And what is with you that you would not eat from what the name of Allah has been mentioned over, when He has laid out in detail for you what He has forbidden you, except what you are forced to. And many lead others astray by their desires, without knowledge. Your Lord knows best those who cross the limits.
Wa zaroo zaahiral ismi wa baatinah; innal lazeena yaksiboonal ismaa sa yujzawna bimaa kaanoo yaqtarifoon
And leave the outward of sin and its inward. Those who earn sin will be paid for what they were doing.
And do not eat from what the name of Allah has not been mentioned over. It is defiance. And the devils inspire their allies to argue with you. And if you obey them, you are those who associate.
Awa man kaana maitan fa ahyainaahu wa ja'alnaa lahoo noorany yamshee bihee fin naasi kamamm masaluhoo fiz zulumaati laisa bikhaarijim minhaa; kazaalika zuyyina lilkaafireena maa kaanoo ya'maloon
Is one who was dead and We gave him life and made for him a light by which he walks among people, like one whose likeness is in the darknesses, not coming out of them. In this way what the disbelievers were doing was made to look good to them.
Wa kazaalika ja'alnaa fee kulli qaryatin akaabira mujrimeehaa liyamkuroo feehaa wa maa yamkuroona illaa bi anfusihim wa maa yash'uroon
And in this way We placed in every town its greatest criminals, to scheme in it. And they scheme only against themselves, and they do not realize it.
Wa izaa jaaa'athum Aayatun qaaloo lan nu'mina hatta nu'taa misla maaa ootiya Rusulul laah; Allahu a'almu haisu yaj'alu Risaalatah; sa yuseebul lazeena ajramoo saghaarun 'indal laahi wa 'azaabun shadeedum bimaa kaanoo yamkuroon
And when a sign comes to them they say, we will not believe until we are given the like of what the messengers of Allah were given. Allah knows best where He places His message. Smallness before Allah will strike those who committed crimes, and a severe punishment, for the scheming they were doing.
Famai yuridil laahu ai yahdiyahoo yashrah sadrahoo lil islaami wa mai yurid ai yudillaho yaj'al sadrahoo daiyiqan harajan ka annamaa yassa' 'adu fis samaaa'; kazaalika yaj'alul laahur rijsa 'alal lazeena la yu'minoon
So whoever Allah wants to guide, He opens his chest to submission. And whoever He wants to let go astray, He makes his chest tight and constricted, as though he were climbing into the sky. In this way Allah places defilement on those who do not believe.
Wa haazaa siraatu Rabbika Mustaqeemaa; qad fassalnal Aayaati liqawminy yazzakkaroon
And this is the path of your Lord, straight. We have laid out the signs in detail for a people who take heed.
For them is the home of peace with their Lord. And He is their Protector for what they were doing.
Wa yamwa yahshuruhum jamee'ai yaa ma'sharal jinni qadistaksartum minal insi wa qaala awliyaaa'uhy minal insi Rabbanas tamta'a ba'dunaa biba'dinw wa balaghnaaa ajalannal lazeee ajjalta lanaa; qaalan Naaru maswaakum khaalideena feehaaa illaa maa shaaa'allaah; inna Rabbaka Hakeemun 'Aleem
And on the Day He gathers them all, company of the jinn, you took much from mankind. And their allies among mankind will say, our Lord, we benefited from one another and we reached the term You appointed for us. He will say, the Fire is your dwelling, remaining in it, except as Allah wills. Your Lord is Wise, Knowing.
Wa kazaalika nuwallee ba'daz zaalimeena ba'dam bimaa kaanoo yaksiboon
And in this way We make some of the wrongdoers allies of others, for what they were earning.
Yaa ma'sharal jinni wal insi alam yaatikum Rusulum minkum yaqussoona 'alaikum Aayaatee wa yunziroonakum liqaaa'a Yawmikum haazaa; qaaloo shahidnaa 'alaaa anfusinaa wa gharrat humul hayaatud dunyaa wa shahidooo 'alaa anfusihim annahum kaanoo kaafireen
Company of the jinn and mankind, did messengers not come to you from among you, recounting My signs to you and warning you of the meeting of this Day of yours. They will say, we testify against ourselves. And the life of this world deceived them, and they testified against themselves that they were disbelievers.
Zaalika al lam yakkur Rabbuka muhlikal quraa bizulminw wa ahluhaa ghaafiloon
That is because your Lord would not destroy towns for wrongdoing while their people were unaware.
And for each are ranks according to what they did. And your Lord is not unaware of what they do.
Wa Rabbukal ghaniyyu zur rahmah; iny yashaa yuz hibkum wa yastakhlif mim ba'dikum maa yashaaa'u kamaaa ansha akum min zurriyyati qawmin aakhareen
And your Lord is the Free of need, the Owner of mercy. If He willed He could remove you and put in place after you whatever He wills, as He brought you into being from the offspring of another people.
Inna maa too'adoona la aatinw wa maaa antum bimu'jizeen
What you are promised is coming, and you cannot escape it.
Qul yaa qawmi' maloo 'alaa makaanatikum innee 'aamilun fasawfa ta'lamoona man takoonu lahoo 'aaqibatud daar; innahoo laa yuflihuz zaalimoon
Say, my people, work in your position. I am working. You will come to know who will have the outcome of the home. The wrongdoers will not succeed.
Wa ja'aloo lillaahi mimmaa zara-a minal harsi walan'aami naseeban faqaaloo haazaa lillaahi biza'mihim wa haaza lishurakaa'inaa famaa kaana lishurakaaa'ihim falaa yasilu ilal laahi wa maa kaana lillaahi fahuwa yasilu ilaa shurakaaa'ihim; saaa'a maa yahkumoon
And they assigned to Allah a share of what He produced of crops and cattle, and they said, this is for Allah, by their claim, and this is for our partners. So what was for their partners does not reach Allah, and what was for Allah reaches their partners. Evil is what they judge.
Wa kazaalika zaiyana likaseerim minal mushrikeena qatla awlaadihim shurakaaa'uhum liyurdoohum wa liyalbisoo 'alaihim deenahum wa law shaaa'al laahu maa fa'aloohu fazarhum wa maa yaftaroon
And in this way their partners made the killing of their children look good to many of those who associate, to destroy them and confuse their religion for them. And if Allah had willed they would not have done it. So leave them and what they invent.
Wa qaaloo haaziheee an'aamunw wa harsun hijrun laa yat'amuhaaa illaa man nashaaa'u biza'mihim wa an'aamun hurrimat zuhooruhaa wa an'aamul laa yazkuroonas mal laahi 'alaihaf tiraaa'an 'alaih; sa yajzeehim bimaa kaanoo yaftaroon
And they said, these cattle and crops are restricted, no one eats them except whom we wish, by their claim. And cattle whose backs are forbidden. And cattle over which they do not mention the name of Allah, inventing against Him. He will pay them for what they were inventing.
Wa qaaloo maa fee butooni haazihil an'aami khaalisatul lizukoorinaa wa muharramun 'alaaa azwaajinaa wa iny yakum maitatan fahum feehi shurakaaa'; sa yajzeehim wasfahum; innahoo Hakeemun 'Aleem
And they said, what is in the bellies of these cattle is purely for our males and forbidden to our wives. And if it is stillborn, they are partners in it. He will pay them for their description. He is Wise, Knowing.
Qad khasiral lazeena qatalooo awlaadahum safaham bighairi 'ilminw wa harramoo maa razaqahumul laahuf tiraaa'an 'alal laah; qad dalloo wa maa kaanoo muhtadeen
Those have lost who killed their children in foolishness, without knowledge, and made forbidden what Allah provided them, inventing against Allah. They have gone astray, and they were not guided.
Wa Huwal lazee ansha-a jannaatim ma'rooshaatinw wa ghaira ma'rooshaatinw wan nakhla wazzar'a mukhtalifan ukuluhoo wazzaitoona warrum maana mutashaabihanw wa ghaira mutashaabih; kuloo min samariheee izaaa asmara wa aatoo haqqahoo yawma hasaadihee wa laa tusrifoo; innahoo laa yuhibbul musrifeen
And He is the One who brought into being gardens trellised and not trellised, and the palm and the crops with different produce, and the olive and the pomegranate, alike and not alike. Eat of its fruit when it bears fruit, and give its due on the day of its harvest. And do not be excessive. He does not love those who are excessive.

And of the cattle, some for carrying and some for bedding. Eat from what Allah has provided you, and do not follow the steps of Satan. He is a clear enemy to you.

And of camels two, and of cattle two. Say, is it the two males He forbade, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain. Or were you witnesses when Allah instructed you with this. So who does greater wrong than one who invents a lie against Allah to lead people astray without knowledge. Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.

Say, I do not find in what is revealed to me anything forbidden to one who eats it, except that it be dead meat, or blood poured out, or the flesh of swine, for it is defilement, or a defiance over which a name other than Allah has been invoked. But whoever is forced, not desiring it and not exceeding, then your Lord is Forgiving, Merciful.

And to those who were Jews We forbade every animal with a claw. And of cattle and sheep We forbade them their fat, except what their backs carried, or the entrails, or what is mixed with bone. That is how We repaid them for their overreaching. And We are truthful.

So if they call you a liar, say, your Lord is the Owner of wide mercy, and His force will not be turned back from the criminal people.

Those who associated will say, if Allah had willed we would not have associated, nor our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything. In this way those before them called it a lie, until they tasted Our force. Say, do you have any knowledge you could bring out for us. You follow only conjecture, and you only guess.

Say, to Allah belongs the conclusive argument. And if He had willed He would have guided you all.

Say, bring your witnesses who testify that Allah forbade this. Then if they testify, do not testify with them. And do not follow the desires of those who called Our signs a lie and those who do not believe in the Hereafter, and they set up equals to their Lord.

Say, come, I will recite what your Lord has forbidden you. That you associate nothing with Him. And to parents, good treatment. And do not kill your children out of poverty. We provide for you and for them. And do not approach the indecencies, what is open of them and what is hidden. And do not kill the soul Allah has forbidden except by right. That is what He instructed you with, so that you may use your reason.

And do not approach the wealth of the orphan except in the way that is best, until he reaches his full strength. And give full measure and weight in justice. We do not burden a soul beyond its capacity. And when you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative. And fulfil the covenant of Allah. That is what He instructed you with, so that you may take heed.
Wa annna haazaa Siraatee mustaqeeman fattabi'oohu wa laa tattabi'us subula fatafarraqa bikum 'an sabeelih; zaalikum wassaakum bihee la'allakum tattaqoon
And this is My path, straight, so follow it. And do not follow the other ways, or they will separate you from His way. That is what He instructed you with, so that you may become conscious.

Then We gave Musa the Book, completing it for the one who does good, and a detailing of everything, and a guidance and a mercy, so that they may believe in the meeting with their Lord.
And this is a Book We sent down, blessed, so follow it and be conscious, so that you may receive mercy.

So that you would not say, the Book was only sent down on two groups before us, and we were unaware of their study.

Or say, if the Book had been sent down on us we would have been better guided than them. So a clear proof has come to you from your Lord, and guidance and mercy. So who does greater wrong than one who called the signs of Allah a lie and turned away from them. We will pay those who turn away from Our signs with the worst punishment for their turning away.

Are they waiting for anything but the angels to come to them, or your Lord to come, or some of the signs of your Lord to come. On the Day some of the signs of your Lord come, belief will not benefit a soul that did not believe before, or earn good in its belief. Say, wait. We are waiting.
Innal lazeena farraqoo deenahum wa kaanoo shiya'allasta minhum fee shai'; innamaaa amruhum ilallaahi summma yunabbi'uhum bimaa kaanoo yaf'aloon
Those who divided their religion and became factions, you have nothing to do with them. Their matter is with Allah, then He will tell them what they were doing.

Qul innanee hadaanee Rabbeee ilaa Siraatim Mustaqeemin deenan qiyamam Millata Ibraaheema haneefaa; wa maa kaana minal mushrikeen
Say, my Lord has guided me to a straight path, an upright religion, the way of Ibrahim, inclining to truth. And he was not of those who associate.

Say, my prayer and my rites and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Laa shareeka lahoo wa bizaalika umirtu wa ana awwalul muslimeen
He has no partner. And with that I was commanded, and I am the first of those who submit.

Say, shall I seek a Lord other than Allah, when He is the Lord of everything. And no soul earns except against itself. And no bearer of burden bears the burden of another. Then to your Lord is your return, and He will tell you about what you used to differ in.
Wa Huwal lazee ja'alakum khalaaa'ifal ardi wa rafa'a ba'dakum fawqa ba'din darajaatil liyabluwakum fee maaa aataakum; inna Rabbaka saree'ul 'iqaab; wa innahoo la Ghafoorur Raheem
And He is the One who made you successors on the earth and raised some of you above others in ranks, to test you in what He has given you. Your Lord is swift in punishment, and He is Forgiving, Merciful.
Tafsir
The Commentary
Overview
This Is My Straight Path.
Part Three does two things. It dismantles a system of religious rules that nobody had been given, and then it replaces it with ten instructions in three verses.
The dismantling is forensic. They had divided their crops between Allah and their partners, with the accounting arranged so that only one side ever gained. They had declared certain animals off limits, certain backs unridable, certain unborn animals permitted to men and forbidden to their wives. Verses 143 and 144 then ask the question that ends the whole structure, and it is asked four times with slight variations: is it the two males He forbade, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain. Name the rule. Nobody could.
Then verses 151 to 153, which are as close as the Quran comes to a code. Ten instructions, and each of the three verses closes with a different faculty. That you may use your reason. That you may take heed. That you may become conscious. Reason, memory, and awe, one attached to each block.
And the chapter closes on four things belonging to one owner. My prayer and my rites and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds.
Verses 111 to 135
The Chest That Opens and the Chest That Tightens.
Verse 111 finishes the argument the chapter began at verse 7. Even if the angels came down, and the dead spoke to them, and everything were gathered in front of them, they would not believe. The maximum possible evidence is described and dismissed in one sentence, because the obstacle was never located in the evidence.
Verse 112 describes the opposition as a permanent feature rather than a local problem. We made for every prophet an enemy, devils among people and jinn, inspiring one another with zukhruf al-qawl, decorated speech. Zukhruf is gold plating. The phrase means speech worked on until it shines, with the working done on the surface. Anyone who has watched a bad idea dressed well outperform a good idea stated plainly knows the technique.
Verse 116 is one of the most quoted verses in the chapter and one of the most resisted. If you obey most of those on the earth, they will lead you away from the way of Allah. Not some. Most. The verse removes numbers from the list of things that count as evidence, permanently, and then explains why: they follow only conjecture.
Verse 120 is six words long in Arabic and covers everything. Leave the outward of sin and its inward. Public and private, act and appetite, the version other people can see and the version only you can.
Verse 122 gives the likeness the whole section turns on. One who was dead, and We gave him life, and made for him a light by which he walks among people. Three stages, and the third one is the surprise. The light is not described as illumination for private benefit. It is a light he walks with among people. The gift shows up in how he moves through a crowd.
Verse 124 records the objection underneath most religious resentment. We will not believe until we are given the like of what the messengers of Allah were given. Not, the message is false. Why him. And the answer is seven words: Allah knows best where He places His message.
And verse 125 describes both outcomes physically. Whoever Allah wants to guide, He opens his chest to submission. And whoever He wants to let go astray, He makes his chest tight and constricted, as though he were climbing into the sky. Anyone who has climbed high enough knows what happens to the chest as the air thins. The verse uses that sensation as the likeness for what refusing does to a person, and pairs it with its opposite, a chest that widens.
Verses 136 to 150
Rules Nobody Was Given.
Verse 136 is a small piece of accounting that exposes an entire religious system. They divided the produce, some for Allah and some for their partners. And then the rule: what was set aside for the partners never goes to Allah, but what was set aside for Allah does go to the partners. The traffic runs one way. Whatever the theology said, the ledger tells you who they actually believed in.
Verses 138 and 139 catalogue the invented restrictions, and the detail in verse 139 is the one to notice. What is in the bellies of these cattle is purely for our males and forbidden to our wives. And if it is stillborn, they are partners in it. When the animal is born healthy, the men eat. When it comes out dead, the women are suddenly included. Every invented rule in the list turns out, on inspection, to advantage the people who invented it.
Then verses 143 and 144 conduct the interrogation. Eight in pairs. Sheep, goats, camels, cattle, each in a male and a female. And the question, repeated with each: is it the two males He forbade, or the two females, or what the wombs of the two females contain. It is not a rhetorical flourish. It is a demand to state the rule at the level of the animal, and the rules had never been stated at that level because they came from nowhere. Then the closing question in verse 144, which is the one that ends it: or were you witnesses when Allah instructed you with this.
Verse 145 then gives what the actual revelation contains, and the striking thing is its size. Dead meat. Blood poured out. Swine. And what was consecrated to something other than Allah. Four items, against a system with dozens. And an exemption for anyone forced.
Verse 148 records the defense that arrives when the invented rules collapse. If Allah had willed we would not have associated, nor our fathers, and we would not have forbidden anything. Predestination invoked as an alibi. The reply does not argue theology. It asks for evidence. Do you have any knowledge you could bring out for us. And then verse 149 settles it: to Allah belongs the conclusive argument.
And verse 150 gives an instruction about testimony that is worth carrying. Bring your witnesses who testify that Allah forbade this. Then if they testify, do not testify with them. Witnesses can be produced for anything. Their presence does not obligate you to join them.
Verses 151 to 165
Ten Instructions and a Closing.
Verses 151 to 153 are the nearest thing in the Quran to a tablet, and Ibn Abbas is reported to have said these are the verses in which the mothers of the book are contained. The list runs: associate nothing with Him. Treat parents well. Do not kill your children out of poverty. Do not approach the indecencies, open or hidden. Do not kill the soul except by right. Do not approach the orphan’s wealth except in the best way. Give full measure and weight. Be just when you speak, even about a relative. Fulfil the covenant of Allah. Follow this path and no other.
Read the order. Tawhid first, then parents, then children, then private conduct, then life, then property held in trust, then commerce, then speech, then covenant, then the path itself. It moves outward from the centre in a single sweep.
Two clauses sit inside the list and change how it should be read. In verse 151, after the prohibition on killing children out of poverty: We provide for you and for them. The order in that phrase is deliberate. Their provision is mentioned alongside yours, not after it, and the fear being addressed is a fear about arithmetic. And in verse 152, dropped in between full measure and just speech: We do not burden a soul beyond its capacity. The exact standard is demanded, and in the same breath the demand is capped at what a person can actually carry.
The command in verse 152 about speech deserves its own line. When you speak, be just, even if it concerns a relative. Placed between weights and covenants, which is where it belongs, because speech is measured too.
And verse 153. This is My path, straight, so follow it. And do not follow the other ways, or they will separate you from His way. Ibn Mas’ud reported that the Prophet, peace be upon him, drew a straight line and said this is the path of Allah, then drew lines to its right and left and said these are paths, on each of them a devil calling to it, and then recited this verse. Reported by Ahmad and an-Nasa’i. The image is of one line and many, and the many are not far away. They run alongside.
Verse 160 gives the exchange rate. Whoever comes with a good deed will have ten like it. Whoever comes with a bad deed will be paid only the like of it. Not equal terms. Deliberately unequal, in one direction.
Verse 162 gives the sentence that closes a life. My prayer and my rites and my living and my dying are for Allah, Lord of all worlds. Two acts of worship and two states, one of which nobody controls. A man can dedicate his prayer and his sacrifice by choice, and his living by effort, and his dying by nothing at all except having already handed it over.
And verse 165, the last verse of the chapter, explains the arrangement of the whole world in one line. He made you successors on the earth and raised some of you above others in ranks, to test you in what He has given you. The inequality is not incidental to the test. It is the instrument of it. Whatever your rank, it is the question you are being asked.
Structural Summary
Verses One Hundred and Eleven to One Hundred and Sixty-Five. This Is My Straight Path.
Maximum evidence described and dismissed. Speech gold plated on the surface. Numbers removed from the list of things that count. Sin named in both its versions. A light for walking among people. A resentment that was never about the message. A chest opened and a chest tightened at altitude. A ledger that ran one way. Rules that always favoured the men who made them. A demand to name the rule at the level of the animal. Four prohibitions against a system of dozens. Predestination offered as an alibi and answered with a request for evidence. Witnesses produced and not joined. Ten instructions moving outward from the centre. Provision guaranteed for the children before the fear is addressed. Ten for one and one for one. Four things handed over, one of them beyond anyone’s control. And ranks named as the instrument of the test.
The Practice
Take It Into the Week
Verse 116. The verse removes numbers from the evidence. Name one position you hold mainly because the people around you hold it. Find out this week what the actual basis for it is, and be willing to lose it.
Verse 152. The verse commands justice in speech even about a relative. Think of the last time you shaded an account of events to protect someone close to you. Correct the record with the person you told.
Verse 162. The verse hands over four things. Say it out loud tonight, in Arabic if you can, and name for yourself which of the four you are actually holding back.
