The Surah · Al-Ahzab

Yaa aiyuhan Nabiyyut taqil laaha wa laa tuti'il kaafirina wal munaafiqin; innal laaha kaana 'aliman Hakimaa

Prophet, be mindful of Allah, and do not obey the disbelievers and the hypocrites. Allah is Knowing, Wise.

Wattabi' maa yuhaaa ilaika mir Rabbik; innal laaha kaana bimaa ta'maluna Khabira

Follow what is revealed to you from your Lord. Allah is aware of what you do.

Wa tawakkal 'alal laah; wa kafaa billaahi Wakilaa

And rely upon Allah. Allah is sufficient as a Trustee.

Maa ja'alal laahu lirajulim min qalbaini fi jawfih; wa maa ja'ala azwaajakumul laaa'i tuzaahiruna minhunna ummahaatikum; wa maa ja'ala ad'iyaaa'akum abnaaa'akum; zaalikum qawlukum bi afwaa hikum wallaahu yaqulul haqqa wa Huwa yahdis sabil

Allah has not made two hearts inside any man's chest. He has not made your wives whom you declare unlawful your mothers, and He has not made your adopted sons your sons. That is only your speech from your mouths. Allah speaks the truth and He guides to the way.

Ud'uhum li aabaaa'ihim huwa aqsatu 'indal laah; fa illam ta'lamuo aabaaa'ahum fa ikhwaanukum fid dini wa mawaalikum; wa laisa 'alaikum junaahun fimaaa akhtaatum bihi wa laakim maa ta'ammadat qulubukum; wa kaanal laahu Ghafurar Rahimaa

Call them by their fathers. That is more just with Allah. If you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. There is no blame on you for what you did by mistake, but for what your hearts intended. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

An-Nabiyyu awlaa bil mu'minina min anfusihim wa azwaajuhu ummahatuhum wa ulul arbaami ba'duhum awlaa biba'din fi Kitaabil laahi minal mu'menina wal Muhaajirina illaaa an taf'aluo ilaaa awliyaaa'ikum ma'rufaa; kaana zaalika fil kitaabi masturaa

The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves, and his wives are their mothers. Those of blood relation are closer to one another in the Book of Allah than the believers and the emigrants, except that you may do good to your allies. That is written in the Book.

Wa iz akhaznaa minan Nabiyyina misaaqahum wa minka wa min Nuhinw wa Ibraahima wa Musaa wa Eesab-ni-Maryama wa akhaznaa minhum misaaqan ghalizaa

And when We took from the prophets their covenant, and from you, and from Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa the son of Maryam. We took from them a solemn covenant,

Liyas'alas saadiqina 'an sidqihim; wa a'adda lilkaa firina 'azaaban alimaa

so that He may question the truthful about their truthfulness. He has prepared for the disbelievers a painful punishment.

Yaaa aiyuhal lazina aamanuz kuru ni'matal laahi 'alaikum iz jaaa'atkm junudun fa arsalnaa 'alaihim rihanw wa junudal lam tarawhaa; wa kaanal laahu bimaa ta'maluna Basira

You who believe, remember the favor of Allah upon you when armies came against you, and We sent against them a wind and armies you did not see. Allah is Seeing of what you do.

Iz jaaa'ukum min fawqikum wa min asfala minkum wa iz zaaghatil absaaru wa balaghatil qulubul hanaajira wa tazunnuna billaahiz zununaa

When they came at you from above you and from below you, and when eyes turned aside and hearts reached the throats, and you thought about Allah every kind of thought.

Hunaalikab tuliyal mu'minuna wa zulzilu zilzaalan shadidaa

There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking.

Wa iz yaqulul munaafiquna wallazina fi qulubihim maradum maa wa'adanal laahu wa Rasuluhuo illaa ghururaa

And when the hypocrites and those with sickness in their hearts said, "Allah and His Messenger promised us nothing but delusion."

Wa iz qaalat taaa'ifatum minhum yaaa ahla Yasriba laa muqaamaa lakum farji'u; wa yastaazina fariqum minhumun Nabiyya yaquluna inna buyutanaa 'awrah; wa maa hiya bi'awratin iny yuriduna illaa firaaraa

And when a group of them said, "People of Yathrib, there is no stand for you here, so go back." And a party of them asked permission of the Prophet, saying, "Our houses are exposed," while they were not exposed. They only wanted to flee.

If entry had been made upon them from every side and then they had been asked to turn to disorder, they would have done it, and they would have hesitated over it only a little.

Wa laqad kaanu 'aahadul laaha min qablu laa yuwal lunal adbaar; wa kaana 'ahdul laahi mas'ulaa

They had already made a covenant with Allah before that they would not turn their backs. The covenant with Allah is asked about.

Qul lany y anfa'akumul firaaru in farartum minal mawti awil qatli wa izal laa tumatta'una illaa qalilaa

Say, "Fleeing will not benefit you if you flee from death or killing, and then you would enjoy only a little."

Qul m an zal lazi ya'simukum minal laahi in araada bikum suo'an aw araada bikum rahmah; wa laa yajiduna lahum min dunil laahi waliyyanw wa laa nasiraa

Say, "Who is it that can protect you from Allah if He intends harm for you, or intends mercy for you?" They will find for themselves no protector or helper besides Allah.

Qad ya'lamul laahul mu'awwiqina minkum walqaaa'ilina li ikhwaanihim hahumma ilainaa, wa laa yaatunal baasa illaa qalilaa

Allah already knows those among you who hinder, and those who say to their brothers, "Come to us," and they do not come to the fight except for a little,

Ashihhatan 'alaikum faizaa jaaa'al khawfu ra aytahum yanzuruna ilaika taduru a'yunuhum kallazi yughshaa 'alaihi minal mawti fa izaa zahabal khawfu salqukum bi alsinatin hidaadin ashibbatan 'alal khayr; ulaaa'ika lam yu'minu fa ahbatal laahu a'maalahum; wa kaana zaalika 'alal laahi yasiraa

grudging toward you. When fear comes, you see them looking at you, their eyes rolling like one overcome by death. When the fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues, grudging toward the good. Those have not believed, so Allah has made their deeds worthless. That is easy for Allah.

Yahsabunal Ahzaaba lam yazhabu wa iny yaatil Ahzaabu yawaddu law annahum baaduna fil A'raabi yasaluna 'an ambaaa'ikum wa law kaanu fikum maa qaataluo illaa qalila

They think the confederates have not withdrawn, and if the confederates should come again, they would wish they were bedouins among the desert people, asking for news about you. If they were among you, they would fight only a little.

Laqad kaana lakum fi Rasulil laahi uswatun hasanatul liman kaana yarjul laaha wal yawmal Aakhira wa azkaral laaha kasiraa

There is in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example for anyone who hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much.

Wa lammaa ra al mu'minunal Ahzaaba qaalu haaza maa wa'adanal laahu wa Rasuluh; wa sadaqal laahu wa Rasuluh; wa maa zaadahum illaaa imaananw wa taslimaa

When the believers saw the confederates, they said, "This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us, and Allah and His Messenger spoke the truth." It only increased them in faith and in submission.

Minal mu'minina rijaalun sadaqu maa 'aahadul laaha 'alaihi faminhum man qadaa nahbahu wa minhum mai yantaziru wa maa baddalu tabdilaa

Among the believers are men who were true to what they pledged to Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits. They have not changed in the least.

Li yajziyal aahus saadiqina bisidqihim wa yu'azzibal munaafiqina in shaaa'a aw yatuba 'alaihim; innal laaha kaana Ghafurar Rahimaa

So that Allah may reward the truthful for their truthfulness, and punish the hypocrites if He wills, or accept their repentance. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

Wa raddal laahul lazina kafaru bighaizihim lam yanaalu khairaa; wa kafal laahul mu'mininal qitaal; wa kaanal laahu Qawiyyan 'Azizaa

Allah turned back those who disbelieved in their rage. They gained no good. Allah was sufficient for the believers in the fighting. Allah is Strong, Mighty.

Wa anzalal lazina zaaha ruhum min Ahlil Kitaabi min sa yaasihim wa qazafa fi qulubihimm mur ru'ba friqan taqtuluna wa taasiruna fariqaaa

And He brought down those who supported them among the People of the Book from their strongholds, and cast terror into their hearts. A group you killed, and a group you took captive.

Wa awrasakum ardahum wa diyaarahum wa amwaalahum wa ardal lam tata'uhaa; wa kaanal laahu 'alaa kulli shai'in Qadiraa

And He caused you to inherit their land, their homes and their wealth, and a land you had not set foot on. Allah has power over all things.

Yaaa aiyuhan Nabiyyu qul li azwaajika i kuntunna turidnal hayaatad dunyaa wa zinatahaa fata'aalaina umatti'kunna wa usarrihkunna saraahan jamila

Prophet, say to your wives, "If you want the life of this world and its adornment, come, I will provide for you and release you in a gracious release.

Wa in kuntunna turidnal laaha wa Rasulahu wad Daaral Aakhirata fa innal laaha a'adda lil muhsinaati min kunna ajjran 'azimaa

But if you want Allah, His Messenger and the home of the hereafter, then Allah has prepared for those among you who do good a great reward."

Yaa nisaaa'an Nabiyyi mai yaati minkunna bifaa hishatim mubaiyinatiny yudaa'af lahal 'azaabu di'fain wa kaana zaalika 'alal laahi yasira

Wives of the Prophet, whoever among you commits a clear indecency, the punishment for her is doubled. That is easy for Allah.

Wa mai yaqnut minkunna lillaahi wa Rasulihi wa ta'mal saalihan nu'tihaaa ajrahaa marratayni wa a'tadnaa lahaa rizqan karima

And whoever among you is devoted to Allah and His Messenger and does righteous work, We will give her her reward twice over, and We have prepared for her a generous provision.

Yaa nisaaa'an Nabiyyi lastunna ka ahadim minan nisaaa'i init taqaitunna falaa takhda'na bilqawli fa yatma'al lazi fi qalbihi maradunw wa qulna qawlam ma'rufaa

Wives of the Prophet, you are not like any other women. If you are mindful of Allah, do not be soft in speech, so that one with sickness in his heart is moved to desire, and speak with fitting words.

Wa qarna fi bu yu tikunna wa laa tabarrajna tabarrujal Jaahiliyyatil ulaa wa aqimnas Salaata w aaatinaz Zakaata wa ati'nal laaha wa Rasulah; innamaa yuridul laahu liyuzhiba 'ankumur rijsa Ahlal Bayti wa yutahhirakum tathiraa

And stay in your houses, and do not display yourselves as in the display of the former time of ignorance. Establish the prayer, give the zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah only wishes to remove impurity from you, People of the House, and to purify you completely.

Wazkurna maa yutlaa fi bu yutikunna min aayaatil laahi wal Hikmah; innal laaha kaana latifan Khabira

And remember what is recited in your houses of the verses of Allah and of wisdom. Allah is Subtle, Aware.

It is not for a believing man or a believing woman, when Allah and His Messenger have decided a matter, to have any choice in the matter. Whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has clearly gone astray.

And when you said to the one whom Allah favored and whom you favored, "Keep your wife and be mindful of Allah," while you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose, and you feared the people while Allah has more right that you fear Him. Then when Zayd had no further need of her, We married her to you, so that there would be no difficulty for the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons, when they no longer have need of them. The command of Allah is carried out.

He is the One who sends blessings upon you, and His angels, to bring you out of the darknesses into the light. He is Merciful to the believers.

Give the believers the good news that they will have from Allah great bounty.

You who believe, when you marry believing women and then divorce them before you have touched them, you have no waiting period to count for them. So provide for them and release them in a gracious release.

Prophet, We have made lawful for you your wives to whom you have given their due, and those your right hand possesses from what Allah has given you, and the daughters of your paternal uncles and aunts and the daughters of your maternal uncles and aunts who emigrated with you, and a believing woman who offers herself to the Prophet if the Prophet wishes to marry her, exclusively for you and not for the believers. We know what We have made obligatory upon them concerning their wives and those their right hands possess, so that there is no difficulty for you. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

You may put aside whom you will of them, and take to yourself whom you will, and there is no blame on you if you seek one you had set aside. That is more likely that their eyes be comforted, that they not grieve, and that they be content with what you give them, all of them. Allah knows what is in your hearts. Allah is Knowing, Forbearing.

Women are not lawful to you after this, nor may you exchange them for other wives, even if their beauty pleases you, except those your right hand possesses. Allah is Watchful over all things.

You who believe, do not enter the houses of the Prophet unless permission is given to you for a meal, without waiting for it to be prepared. But when you are invited, enter, and when you have eaten, disperse, without seeking to remain for conversation. That was troubling the Prophet, and he was shy of you, but Allah is not shy of the truth. When you ask them for something, ask from behind a screen. That is purer for your hearts and their hearts. It is not for you to trouble the Messenger of Allah, or to marry his wives after him, ever. That would be a serious matter with Allah.

You who believe, be mindful of Allah and speak a word that is straight.

He will set your deeds right for you and forgive you your sins. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger has attained a great triumph.

Innaa 'aradnal amaanata 'alas samaawaati walardi wal jibaali fa abaina ai yahmil nahaa wa ashfaqna minhaa wa hamalahal insaanu innahu kaana zaluman jahulaa

We offered the Trust to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and they refused to carry it and were afraid of it. Man carried it. He has been unjust and ignorant.

So that Allah may punish the hypocritical men and women, and the men and women who associate others with Him, and so that Allah may turn in mercy to the believing men and believing women. Allah is Forgiving, Merciful.

The Tafsir · The Breakdown

What The Surah Means

Overview

A City Under Siege, and the Law That Came Out of It.

Al-Ahzab is the surah of a community being rebuilt while it is surrounded. The siege in verses 9 through 27 is the Battle of the Trench, when the confederated armies came at Madinah from above and below at once. But the surah does not open on the army. It opens in verse 4 on a sentence about the inside of a man. Allah has not made two hearts inside any man's chest. Everything that follows is the working out of that single principle. A man has one heart, so he has one loyalty, one set of names for his relations, and one register of speech under pressure. The surah then applies it: to adoption in verses 4 and 5, to loyalty during the siege in verses 12 through 20, to the choice put to the Prophet's wives in verses 28 and 29, to the etiquette of his household in verses 53 through 59, and finally, in verse 72, to the Trust that the heavens and the mountains declined and man accepted.

Verses 1 to 8

One Heart, and the Names of Fathers.

Verse 4 is the axis of the surah. Allah has not made two hearts inside any man's chest. It is stated as an anatomical fact and then used as a legal one. From it the verse derives two corrections. A man cannot make his wife into his mother by saying so, and a man cannot make an adopted son into a son by calling him one. That is only your speech from your mouths. Speech does not create reality. Verse 5 then gives the instruction that follows: call them by their fathers, that is more just with Allah. This is a difficult correction, because the practice being ended was generous in intent. The surah does not care about the intent. It cares that a child's lineage is a fact he owns. Then it makes room for love without falsification: if you do not know their fathers, then they are your brothers in religion and those entrusted to you. The bond is preserved and the name is left true. Verse 6 raises the standard of attachment rather than lowering it. The Prophet is closer to the believers than their own selves. Then verse 7 goes to the covenant taken from the prophets, and verse 8 states its purpose in a sentence worth carrying: so that He may question the truthful about their truthfulness. Even the honest man will be asked to account for his honesty.

Verses 9 to 27

The Trench.

Verse 10 is one of the most physically exact descriptions of fear in scripture. They came at you from above you and from below you, and eyes turned aside, and hearts reached the throats, and you thought about Allah every kind of thought. That last clause is the honest one. Not every man in the trench had the same thought. The surah records that the range of thoughts included all of them, and does not pretend otherwise. Verse 11 names the function of the moment. There the believers were tested and shaken with a severe shaking. Pressure does not create character. It reveals the sorting that was already there, and verses 12 through 20 show the sorting happening in real time. The hypocrites say the promise was delusion. A group says there is no stand for you here, go back. Another party asks leave on the grounds that their houses are exposed, and verse 13 corrects the record in four words: while they were not exposed. Verse 19 gives the sharpest portrait of the type in the Quran. When fear comes, their eyes roll like a man overcome by death. When the fear departs, they lash you with sharp tongues. Cowardice in the danger, aggression after it. The same man, two registers, which is exactly what verse 4 said a man cannot sustain. Verse 21 sits in the middle of the siege, not after it. There is in the Messenger of Allah an excellent example, uswatun hasanah, for anyone who hopes for Allah and the Last Day and remembers Allah much. The verse names its own conditions. The example is available to the man who wants the meeting and keeps up the remembrance. Verse 22 is the believers' response to the same sight that broke the others. This is what Allah and His Messenger promised us. It only increased them in faith. Identical input, opposite output. Verse 23 then honors the men who kept their word. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow, and among them is he who awaits. Al-Bukhari records from Anas ibn Malik that they considered this verse to have come down concerning his uncle Anas ibn an-Nadr. The phrase for the living ones, he who awaits, is the position most readers are in. Verse 25 ends the siege without a battle. Allah turned back those who disbelieved in their rage. They gained no good.

Verses 28 to 40

The Choice, and the Seal.

Verses 28 and 29 put a choice to the Prophet's wives that no other household in history has been given. If you want the life of this world and its adornment, come, I will provide for you and release you in a gracious release. If you want Allah, His Messenger and the home of the hereafter, then Allah has prepared a great reward. Note the manner of the exit offered. Gracious release, sarahan jamila, the same phrase used in verse 49 for ordinary believers. Even the door out is required to be dignified. Verses 30 and 31 then state the terms of that house: the consequence doubled and the reward doubled. Elevation raises both sides of the ledger. Anyone who wants standing should read those two verses together before he asks for it. Verse 35 is the verse of the twenty. Ten qualities, each named for men and for women in the same breath: submission, faith, obedience, truthfulness, patience, humility, charity, fasting, chastity, and much remembrance. At-Tirmidhi records that Umm Salamah asked why the women were not mentioned in the Quran as the men were, and this verse came. The list is a complete curriculum, and remembrance is placed last, holding the rest. Verse 37 is the most exposed verse in the Quran about the Prophet himself, peace be upon him. He is told plainly, you concealed within yourself what Allah was to disclose, and you feared the people while Allah has more right that you fear Him. The verse states the reason for the marriage in the text itself: so that there would be no difficulty for the believers concerning the wives of their adopted sons. A social convention that made no sense was ended in the one way that could not be argued with, at the cost of the Prophet's own comfort. Verse 40 then gives the correction its final form. Muhammad is not the father of any of your men, but he is the Messenger of Allah and the Seal of the Prophets. The lineage question and the prophethood question are answered in one sentence.

Verses 41 to 73

Straight Speech, and the Trust Nobody Else Would Take.

Verse 41 and verse 42 give the command that this site keeps returning to. Remember Allah with much remembrance, and glorify Him morning and evening. Kathiran, much, is the only quantity the Quran attaches to an act of worship in this way. Verse 43 states what remembrance is actually doing while a man performs it. He is the One who sends blessings upon you, and His angels, to bring you out of the darknesses into the light. Verse 46 calls the Prophet sirajan munira, a lamp giving light, which is a specific kind of usefulness. A lamp does not argue with the dark. Verses 53 through 59 legislate the household and the street, and their common thread is the protection of other people from harm they did not consent to. Verse 53 ends the practice of lingering after a meal because it was troubling the Prophet and he was too shy to say so, and the verse says the reason out loud on his behalf. Verse 58 protects believers from accusations about things they did not do. Verse 59 gives the outer garment its stated purpose in the text: that they will be recognized and not harmed. Verse 56 gives the practice that has been performed by more people, more times, than any other sentence in this surah. Allah and His angels send blessings upon the Prophet. You who believe, send blessings upon him and greet him with peace. Then verses 70 and 71, which are the most portable instruction in the surah. Be mindful of Allah and speak a word that is straight, qawlan sadida. The result is stated immediately: He will set your deeds right for you and forgive you your sins. Straight speech is placed upstream of straight action. Fix what a man says and his deeds get repaired behind it. The surah closes in verse 72 on the Trust. It was offered to the heavens, the earth and the mountains, and they refused it and were afraid of it, and man carried it. The verse does not congratulate him. He has been unjust and ignorant. The capacity to accept responsibility and the tendency to mishandle it arrived in the same creature. Verse 73 gives the purpose of the whole arrangement, and the last word is mercy.

Structural Summary

Seventy-Three Verses. Allah Has Not Made Two Hearts in One Chest.

One principle, applied under siege. A man has one heart, so his loyalties, his names and his speech must agree. The surah records the Trench as it was, including the range of thoughts men had inside it, and sets the Messenger in the middle of it as the example. It puts a choice to a household, states the terms of elevation on both sides, ends a convention about adopted sons at the Prophet's own expense, and legislates a street where nobody is harmed by another man's carelessness. It closes on the Trust that the mountains declined and man accepted, and on the mercy that is the reason it was offered at all.

Verse 56. Fix a daily number for sending peace upon the Prophet, peace be upon him, and keep it on the days you do not feel like it.

Verse 19. Check yourself for the two registers: quiet when it costs something, loud after the danger passes. Name the last time you did it.
