The Tafsir · The Breakdown
What The Surah Means
Overview
Surah Adh-Dhariyat is sixty verses, chapter 51, Makki. It opens on four oaths sworn by things in motion and lands on the shortest statement of purpose in the Quran, in verse 56. Between the two it runs a portrait of the God-conscious that includes how they sleep, a set of visits by angels, and a survey of nations that were given the same evidence and refused it.
The surah also contains the clearest answer in the Quran to the question of what Allah wants from you. Verse 57 states it in the negative and verse 58 states who actually provides. A man whose life is organized around producing output should read those two verses before he reads the one everybody quotes.
I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me. And then, immediately, I want no provision from them.
Verses 15–23 · How They Sleep, and What Is In Their Wealth
They used to sleep but little of the night, and in the hours before dawn they would ask forgiveness.
Kanu qalilan mina al-layli ma yahja'un: they slept little of the night. The description of the muttaqin begins with a fact about their sleep, before any mention of their belief or their speech.
Wa bil-ashari hum yastaghfirun: and in the last part of the night they sought forgiveness. Not asking for things. Asking forgiveness, in the hour when a man is least performing for anyone.
Wa fi amwalihim haqqun lissa'ili wal-mahrum: and in their wealth was a right for the one who asks and the one who is deprived. The same clause as Al-Ma'arij 24 and 25, arriving from a different direction, and again the second claimant is the one who does not ask.
Wa fi al-ardi ayatun lil-muqinin, wa fi anfusikum, afala tubsirun: on the earth are signs for those of certainty, and within yourselves. Do you not see. The nearest available evidence is the body reading the verse.
Wa fi as-sama'i rizqukum wa ma tu'adun: and in the sky is your provision and what you are promised. The location of your provision is named, and it is not the market.
Short sleep, pre dawn forgiveness, a right already owed in the wealth, and provision held above the ceiling.
Verses 24–37 · The Guests
Has the account of the honored guests of Ibrahim reached you?
Faragha ila ahlihi faja'a bi'ijlin samin: he went quietly to his household and came with a fattened calf. Ibn Kathir notes the details of hospitality in the sequence. He did not announce it, he did not ask them what they wanted, and the animal was the best he had.
Falamma ra'a aydiyahum la tasilu ilayhi nakirahum wa awjasa minhum khifah: when he saw their hands not reaching for it, he grew uneasy and felt a fear of them. The unease is honest and it is recorded.
Fabashsharuhu bighulamin 'alim: they gave him glad tidings of a learned boy. Fa aqbalati imra'atuhu fi sarratin fasakkat wajhaha wa qalat 'ajuzun 'aqim: his wife came forward in a loud reaction, struck her face, and said, an old barren woman. The human response is preserved in the text without correction.
Qalu kadhaliki qala Rabbuk: thus said your Lord. The answer is not an argument about biology. It is a report of who said it.
The passage then turns to Lut, and the destruction is described as stones of clay marked by your Lord for the transgressors, with the believers brought out first, and one house found.
He fed them before he trusted them, and he was given a son at an age when the news made his wife strike her face.
Verses 38–46 · The Same Evidence, Four Times
And in Musa, when We sent him to Pharaoh with clear authority.
Fatawalla bi-ruknihi wa qala sahirun aw majnun: he turned away with his supporters and said, a magician or a madman. Power responds to evidence by naming the messenger.
Wa fi 'Adin idh arsalna 'alayhimu ar-riha al-'aqim: the barren wind, which leaves nothing behind it that it comes upon.
Wa fi Thamuda idh qila lahum tamatta'u hatta hin: enjoy yourselves for a time. The sentence was passed as an invitation to continue.
Wa qawma Nuhin min qablu innahum kanu qawman fasiqin: and the people of Nuh before that.
Four cases, one pattern, each introduced with the same construction. The surah is building an evidentiary record rather than telling stories, and the repetition is the argument.
Four nations, one response, one outcome. The surah files them as exhibits.
Verses 47–51 · Built, Expanded, Paired
And the heaven We constructed with strength, and We are its expander.
Was-sama'a banaynaha bi'aydin wa inna lamusi'un: We built the heaven with power, and We are its expander. Musi'un carries the sense of widening and of having capacity. The mufassirun of the classical period read it as vastness and as ability, and the wording stands on its own without any modern gloss attached to it.
Wal-arda farashnaha fani'ma al-mahidun: and the earth We spread out, and how excellent are We at spreading.
Wa min kulli shay'in khalaqna zawjayni la'allakum tadhakkarun: and of everything We created pairs, so that you might remember. Pairing is presented as a general feature of creation rather than a fact about animals.
Fafirru ila Allah, inni lakum minhu nadhirun mubin: so flee to Allah. I am a clear warner to you from Him. The verb is flight. Not walk, not turn, not consider. And the destination is the One you would normally be fleeing from.
Flee to Allah. The direction of escape and the source of the warning are the same.
Verses 56–60 · What He Wants From You
I did not create the jinn and mankind except to worship Me.
Wa ma khalaqtu al-jinna wal-insa illa liya'budun: the purpose is stated once, plainly, with no conditions attached. Ibn Kathir carries Ibn Abbas's gloss on liya'budun as to acknowledge Me and to serve Me.
Ma uridu minhum min rizqin wa ma uridu an yut'imun: I want no provision from them, and I do not want them to feed Me. The verse forecloses the entire transactional reading of religion. Nothing you produce is needed.
Inna Allaha huwa ar-Razzaqu dhu al-quwwati al-matin: Allah is the Provider, the Possessor of firm strength. The name is stated in the definite. He is the Provider, not a provider.
Read verses 56 to 58 as one instrument. You were made for worship, He needs nothing from you, and He is the one who feeds you. Every anxiety about output is answered by the middle verse.
Fa inna lilladhina zalamu dhanuban mithla dhanubi ashabihim fala yasta'jilun: for the wrongdoers is a share like the share of their companions, so let them not ask Me to hurry.
Made for worship, needed for nothing, fed by Him. That is the whole economy of the surah.

Verses 56–60The PurposeCreated for worship, wanted for no provision, fed by the Provider who possesses firm strength.
Why This Surah Is For You
Verses 56 to 58 are the correction for a man whose identity is built on producing. You were made to worship, He wants no provision from you, and He is the Provider. Nothing you generate is needed by the One you are working for, which removes the entire basis for anxiety about output while leaving the obligation to work fully intact.
Verse 15 begins the description of the God-conscious with how they sleep. Not with their creed, their speech, or their giving. The night is the first item on the list, again, exactly as Al-Muzzammil put it, and the hour named is the one before dawn when there is no audience.
Verse 19 puts a right in their wealth belonging to the asker and the deprived, which is the third time this juz region has stated it. The Quran keeps repeating that the money in your account already contains someone else's claim.
Verse 50 is one word of instruction, fafirru, flee. Not consider, not return when convenient. It assumes you are already running from something and it redirects the running. The destination is the One most men are running from.
The Practice · Daily Integration
Sixty Verses. Take the Last Hour.
Take the hour before dawn once this week and use it for istighfar only, asking for nothing else. That is verse 18 exactly.
Say verses 57 and 58 out loud on a day the numbers are bad. He wants no provision from you, and He is the Provider.
Feed someone before you have decided about them. Ibrahim brought the calf before he knew who they were.
When you catch yourself running from something, apply verse 50 and change the direction rather than the speed.
Made for worship, needed for nothing, and fed by Him. So flee to Allah.
