Tranquility sent down into the hearts of the believers so that faith increased on the day everything looked wrong, a pledge given to a man and described as given to Allah with His hand above their hands, and the pledge under the tree at the moment the talks looked dead. An excuse quoted before it was offered, our properties and our families kept us busy, answered by naming the calculation underneath it, and the same men asking to come once there was spoil. Hands restrained on both sides in the valley of Mecca for the sake of believers not yet known, the fervor of ignorance answered with tranquility and the word of God-consciousness, a vision fulfilled in truth on a timing nobody assumed, and a closing description of those with him, firm outward, merciful inward, marked by prostration, like a seed that thickens until it stands on its own stalk.

A battlefield instruction stated in the concrete terms of its time and bounded in the same verse until the war lays down its burdens, a conditional promise that supporting Allah returns help and firm footing, consumption without reference to anything beyond the meal set against four rivers and forgiveness, men who sit through the whole gathering and walk out asking what he just said, guidance compounding for the guided, locks named as the alternative to reflecting on the Quran, a test that runs until the strivers and the patient are evident, hypocrites known by the slant in how they speak, a warning to believers not to nullify their own deeds, and a wealth question He declines to ask because pressing would bring the resentment out, closing on a community told it is replaceable.

A messenger who states plainly that he is not something new among the messengers and does not know what will be done with him, the two halves of a life in one sentence where saying our Lord is Allah is followed by standing firm, the most complete passage in the Quran on the obligation to parents with the mother's hardship named twice and the thirty months of bearing and weaning, the prayer of a man who reaches forty asking for gratitude, approved work, and a righteous generation behind him, the son who answers his parents with a word of contempt, a verse for men arriving with the account already spent, a people who read an approaching cloud as rain when it carried the wind, jinn who commanded silence among themselves and went home as warners, and a closing instruction to be patient like the messengers of firm resolve.
- [Surah Ad-Dukhan](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/ad-dukhan): Fifty-nine verses opening on a night described as blessed, in which every wise matter is separated out and decided, sent as a command from a Lord who has always been sending, and classified as mercy before anything else. A visible smoke that covers the people, carried in the tradition both as a famine that struck the Quraysh and as something still to come, a plea to have the punishment removed with belief promised in exchange, and a flat prediction that relief will produce reversion. The account of Pharaoh compressed to a request for the servants of Allah, a threat of stoning, and an instruction to travel by night and leave the sea in its parted state. Then the most specific inventory in the Quran of what a powerful man leaves behind, gardens, springs, crops, noble sites, and a comfort he had been delighting in, handed to another people in a single clause, with the heaven and the earth not weeping for him. The heavens and the earth were not created in play. The tree of Zaqqum, the titles of the mighty and the honorable read back to a man at the moment they stop working, a secure place among gardens and springs for those who guarded against evil, and the Quran made easy in the Prophet's own tongue so that they might remember.
- [Surah Ash-Shura](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/ash-shura): Fifty-three verses named after one word inside a list of the qualities of the believers, consultation among themselves. The clearest statement of transcendence in the Book, nothing is like Him and He is the Hearing the Seeing. One religion enjoined on Nuh, Ibrahim, Musa, and Isa, with an order to establish it and not divide in it, and division traced to envy rather than to doctrine. Two harvests, an increase for the one who wants the Hereafter and a portion for the one who wants this world. Provision sent down by measure because expanded provision would produce transgression in the land. Affliction traced to what the hands earned alongside a pardon that is larger than the reckoning. Self defense granted against tyranny, recompense in kind permitted, and pardon priced by naming who pays the reward for it. Patience and forgiveness filed under the matters of firm resolve, and children given as daughters or sons purely as He wills.
- [Surah Ghafir](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/ghafir): Eighty-five verses opening with four descriptions of Allah in a single line, Forgiver of sin, Acceptor of repentance, severe in punishment, Owner of abundance, with the severity placed third between two mercies. Angels who carry the Throne glorifying their Lord and asking forgiveness for the believers, their parents, their spouses, and their offspring. He knows the treachery of the eyes and what the chests conceal. The longest speech in the Quran by an unnamed man, a believer inside the family of Pharaoh who concealed his faith, argued procedure before theology, raised the cost of being wrong, and only at the end said what he believed, closing with I entrust my affair to Allah, after which Allah protected him from what they plotted. Arrogance named as the content of the chests of those who dispute without authority. Call upon Me and I will respond, with those too proud to worship entering humiliated. The night made for rest and the day giving sight. Faith declared at the sight of the punishment not benefiting them, named as the way of Allah that has already passed among His servants.
- [Surah Az-Zumar](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/az-zumar): Seventy-five verses named for the groups driven in throngs at the end, to one of two destinations. The sorting principle stated early and it is not deeds, it is whether the religion is held purely for Allah or held with something mixed in, with the excuse of the ally worshippers quoted in their own words. Creation staged in the wombs of the mothers in three darknesses. The question of whether those who know and those who do not know are equal, placed after a description of night worship. The patient given their reward without account, the only reward in the Book that is uncounted. A slave owned by partners who quarrel against a slave belonging to one man. Souls taken at death and taken in sleep, some kept and some released until a named term. The widest verse of hope in the Quran, addressed to those who transgressed against themselves as My servants, forgiving all sins together, followed immediately by the instruction to turn back before the punishment arrives. Two throngs at two sets of gates, with the greeting at the Garden given before the door is reached.
- [Surah Sad](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/sad): Eighty-eight verses that open by naming the obstacle to belief as izzah and shiqaq, a sense of self importance and a settled taste for opposition, rather than any shortage of evidence. The chiefs walking off and telling each other to hold to their gods, reading the message as a move on their standing. Then four case studies in power. Dawud, given strength and constant returning, startled by two litigants who climb the wall of his chamber, ruling on the case before the second man speaks, and understanding in the same moment that the test was his. The command to the ruler that names preference, not bribery, as the mechanism of corruption. Sulayman with the horses that occupied him until sunset, the body placed on his throne, and a kingdom asked for that would suit no one after. Ayyub told to strike the ground with his own foot, and found patient in the same words of praise given to the kings. Ibrahim, Ishaq, and Ya'qub named as possessors of strength and vision together. And the first refusal in history, argued from origin: I am better than him, You created me from fire and created him from clay.
- [Surah Ya-Sin](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/ya-sin): Eighty-three verses, the surah recited most often over the dying, presented here for what it argues rather than for merits that cannot be verified. Verse 12 records what a man sent ahead and his traces, the marks that keep working after he stops. The town that denied three messengers, and the man who came from the farthest part of the city running, with no rank, arguing for them on the grounds that they asked for no payment. He is killed and his first recorded thought is that he wishes his people knew what his Lord had forgiven him. Then the evidence: a dead field revived, food their hands did not make, the day stripped off the night, the sun running to a resting place, each body swimming in its own orbit, and the laden ship. The Trumpet, the two groups, and peace said as a word directly from a Merciful Lord. The covenant quoted back to the children of Adam, the mouths sealed and the hands and feet testifying, and aging offered as the argument. It ends with a man holding a crumbled bone asking who will revive it, answered by the fire he lights from a green tree and by a command that is only be, and it is.

- [Surah As-Saffat, Part One](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/as-saffat/part-1): Verses 1 to 74. Three oaths by those ranged in ranks, sworn to a single clause, that your God is One. A heaven guarded against every rebellious devil and closed to any listening. The comparison put to the deniers, whether they are stronger in creation than what else was created, answered with sticky clay. Then the halt. Gather them, and stop them, for they are to be questioned, with the mutual support that organized them in life called for and not arriving. The followers accuse the leaders of coming at them from the right, the side of strength and credibility, and the leaders answer with the truest line in the passage: we had no authority over you. The Garden described by what it does not cost, a drink with no headache in it, and a man who looks down into the Blaze, finds the companion who used to ask him in that tone whether he really believed all this, and says, by Allah, you nearly ruined me. One instruction in the whole passage: for the like of this, let the workers work. Then the tree of Zaqqum growing in the root of the Blaze, and fathers found astray with sons rushing after them.

Nuh called and was answered out of the flood, Ibrahim came to his Lord with a sound heart and questioned his people about what they carve, the furnace they built when they had no reply, the request for one of the righteous, the command that came in a dream, the son who said do what you are commanded, and the great sacrifice that ransomed him.
- [Surah As-Saffat, Part Three](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/as-saffat/part-3): Verses 114 to 182. Musa and Harun delivered and prevailing, Ilyas naming Ba'l, Lut and the ruins passed twice a day, Yunus swallowed while blameworthy and saved by the tasbih he had already built, then the cross-examination of what the Quraysh claimed about daughters and angels, and the closing on glory, peace upon the messengers, and praise to the Lord of the worlds.

Hearts described by their owners as sitting inside coverings with deafness in the ears and a barrier in between. Hearing, sight, and skins testifying against a man on the Day, the skins answering that Allah made them speak, and the root of the whole behavior named as an assumption that He does not know much of what you do. Those who say our Lord is Allah and then stand firm, met by angels with do not fear and do not grieve. The best speech defined as calling to Allah, working righteousness, and saying plainly I am of the Muslims. The instruction to repel with what is better until the one you had enmity with becomes a devoted friend, granted only to the patient and the one of great fortune. Man who does not tire of praying for good, despairs when evil touches him, and says this is mine the moment relief arrives. Signs promised in the horizons and within themselves until it becomes clear that it is the truth.
- [Surah Az-Zukhruf](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/az-zukhruf): Eighty-nine verses named after decoration. A Book made Arabic so it could be reasoned with, and a people who answered every messenger with one inherited sentence, we found our fathers upon a way. The Quran names the class that says it, the affluent of every town, and answers the demand that revelation be routed through a great man of the two cities by pointing at who distributes the livelihood in the first place. Ranks raised above each other so that people take one another in service, silver roofs and stairways withheld from the deniers so that wealth is not mistaken for approval, and a devil assigned as company to the one who turns blind to the remembrance. Pharaoh calling out to his people with the kingdom of Egypt and the rivers running beneath him as his argument, asking why the messenger had no gold bracelets, and making his people light enough to obey. Isa presented as a servant and an example. Close friends turning into enemies on that Day except those who guard against evil, whatever the souls desire and the eyes delight in, and a closing instruction to turn away and say peace.
- [Surah Al-Jathiyah](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/al-jathiyah): Thirty-seven verses named after the image of every nation on its knees. Evidence laid out in four expanding fields, from the heavens and the earth, to your own creation and the animals scattered across it, to the alternation of night and day and the directing of the winds, each field closed with a different faculty, belief, then certainty, then reasoning. A sinful liar who hears the verses recited and persists arrogantly as though he never heard them. The sea subjected and everything in the heavens and the earth given over. The man who takes his own desire as his god and is left astray on top of knowledge, with hearing, heart, and sight closed in that order. The claim that there is nothing but this life and nothing destroys us except time, answered as a guess rather than a conclusion. And every nation called to a record that speaks in truth, because it was transcribed while the deeds were being done.
- [Surah Al-Hujurat: The Chambers](https://mikerashid.com/quran-study/al-hujurat): Eighteen verses of conduct. Do not advance ahead of Allah and His Messenger, and lower the voice, because deeds can be nullified without the man perceiving it. News from a corrupt source is verified before anyone acts on it, so that no people are harmed in ignorance. Two groups of believers who fight are still called believers, the transgressor is named and stopped, then reconciliation is made with justice. Mockery is forbidden because you do not know the ranking, nicknames are forbidden by name, and assumption, spying, and backbiting are placed in one line with the image of eating the flesh of a dead brother. Peoples and tribes exist so that you may know one another, and the most noble is the most God-conscious.

A command to spend from what you were only made a deputy over, a ranking that places those who gave before the conquest above those who gave after, a goodly loan multiplied, light running ahead of the believers while the hypocrites ask to borrow from it, a question asked of believers about whether the time has not come for their hearts to be humbled, the warning that a long period without softening hardened the hearts of those given scripture before, the life of this world named as play, diversion, adornment, boasting and competing, everything written down beforehand so you neither grieve nor gloat, and iron sent down alongside the scripture and the balance so that people uphold justice.
